I have just been looking at Janice's 'scrapbook backgrounds' topic. This is my first effort. I know it is too dark to be a background. (But I did like the colours). I seem to have a problem. I loaded three new sets of brushes. They all worked fine when I tried them. Now, I have just opened Elements again - and the new brushes have vanished from the list.

That’s lovely whippet. It reminds me of looking at a kaleidoscope.
As far as your brushes are concerned – I’d say you have loaded them as opposed to installing them. If you load them then the next time you open PSE they will be gone and you have to load them again if you want to use them again. This is actually a better way to use your brushes as having too many sets of brushes installed can slow down your software – or so I’m told.

Those are lovely colors. Nothing is too dark to use as a background - however, if it seems too dark for you, you can use it cut into a shape or you can use it as an embellishment on your layout - maybe even layer a solid layer over part of it. With the right photo, it will be a stunning addition to your layout.
As for your brushes? I think Lillias is on the right track.

I seem to have a problem. I loaded three new sets of brushes. They all worked fine when I tried them. Now, I have just opened Elements again - and the new brushes have vanished from the list. You have two choices -- either you load brushes or you install them.
It is usually suggested that you load brushes to temporarily make them available to the Brush tool in the case of brushes that you may not use very often. When you install brushes in the Brushes folder in Elements, you are making them available to the Brush tool on a permanent basis. If you want to permanently install brushes, navigate the path below and paste the .abr files in the Brushes folder. NOTE: Keep Elements closed during the installation process.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 11\Presets\Brushes
Once you activate the Brush tool and bring up the Brush Preset Picker, the brushes you installed in the Brushes folder will be there waiting for you.
NOTE: As you also have Elements 2 . . . here is a word of caution (in case you decide to install brushes in this version).
There is a compatibility issue with brushes when you are using an older version of Elements; you may come across brush sets that don't work. Adobe made some changes in the brush engine -- brush sets created in newer versions of Photoshop won't work in older versions of Photoshop or older versions of Elements. Before you download a brush set, check its description. Usually there will be a reference to which version of Photoshop was used to create the brush set.

Thank you, Sepiana. Yes, I had loaded them.
I don't try to add things to Elements 2, as I know they will probably be incompatible.
I shall install them in 11.
Thank you for your comments, Lillias and Janice. Much appreciated.

having too many sets of brushes installed can slow down your software – or so I’m told. You would have to install LOTS and LOTS of brushes to cause Elements to slow down. This was a possibility in earlier versions of Elements; I believe this does not hold true with more recent versions of Elements. Also, you would have to figure out in this "slowing down" all other add-ons installed in Elements (custom shapes, layer styles, gradients, plug-ins, etc.).
