Welcome to our second B&W Challenge!
This month we would like you to go out and photograph architecture. This can be whole buildings from the outside or some little detail that caught your eye or take it indoors; the choice is yours.
You can either photograph using your camera’s build-in B&W settings or convert you colour photograph into B&W. Whichever way you go, please share with us your settings (if you shot straight in B&W) or your conversion software, any presets you may have used. We would also love to hear why you decided to shoot what you did, what made you decide that this subject would be great in B&W, did you have any challenges in creating a specific mood/convey a certain message?
When you go out to shoot try and think about the different aspects of architecture that would really stand out in a B&W photo, such as geometric patterns, texture, or even scale.
Here is a great little article from the Digital Photography School website on photographing architecture: digital-photography-school.com/photographing-architecture/
My first photo is a detail from a downtown building. As you can see, part of the metal struts are in the sun, so by making the surrounding elements a lot darker in the conversion it really brings out that bit of light.
This second photo is a footbridge in a small town not far from where we live. The main attraction for taking this photo were the leading lines the bridge provided. With the B&W conversion I also wanted to bring out the wood of the bridge and convey what an overcast day it was when I took this shot.
Both photos were taken in colour and then converted in Lightroom using a basic B&W preset as my starting point and then just playing around with the clarity (to bring out more texture), increasing the black points, and adding a slight vignette.
I hope the resources given will provide you with some inspiration to go out there and shoot some great B&W architecture photos. Looking forward to your creations!
