A lot of you know that I host a colony of Purple Martin's, a member of the Swallow Family, each year in my backyard. This year has been a bit more troublesome but all part of the game.
I guess my first nest to fledge will probably happen within the next 7-10 days, so the peak of the season is here and starting downward. I did manage to have 32 successful breeding pairs in 36 nest cavities. I'm quite sure at one time I had all 36 occupied with a pair but two were abandoned for some reason, one failed because of House Sparrows and one never hatched because of infertile eggs I suppose.
The late arrival of birds this year has the status of nests spread out and running late. I have had a great number of subbies(teenagers/2nd year bird's) this year keeping things in a turmoil every morning and afternoon for a couple of hours. The adults are finding adequate food for the young it seems but are not relaxed in their feeding as they bring in food but do not stop and display their catch because the subbies steal the catch before they can get it to the babies.
I found a baby on the ground yesterday, he seemed in good health so I lowered the rack and put him back in a nest of equal age. I think that may be activity of a subbie, In doing so I noticed the start of mites so I have to treat the colony today with Sevin Dust. I nave some nests with large hatchlings who may jump if I disturb them so I will apply Sevin this way. I will sprinkle some just inside of the tunnel entrance and let the adults drag some of the dust into the nests via rubbing their breast feathers & feet in the dust while entering. I have had success with this approach in the past. The larger babies who go to the entrance will also help with this spreading of Sevin.
Speaking of adults feeding babies,,,,, I think this adult needs to feed this adult.
Have a good day
