I am making a selection. I try to use the Refine tools, I chose "add to" selection, I can expand the selection, but it doesn't take. The selection pops back to the one I originally had. The PSE Dummies book does not discuss this as far as I can see. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Don't know if important, but the overall image has had one selection made and blur applied to background and then deselected. I am now trying to select a face for further editing. I made the first face selection with polygonal lasso tool.
I have watched a lot of videos on YouTube about doing these things (editing portraits) and never seen this problem or heard it discussed. Does anybody have a video course on learning PSE 15 on an Apple computer they recommend? I have tried to follow along with several-many videos downloading the images they provide and almost always get to a point where I don't get the same result as is shown in the video(same problem when trying to duplicate an edit described in one of the books on PSE 15). I am perfectly happy to pay some money, but I want the assurance I can get some help from the author when I get stuck.
I described my equipment and think I did it correctly.
Thanks
Carl

Carl,
I am afraid I don't really understand what is going on. I do have some questions though.
- Have you tried adding to your selection before you open the Refine Edge dialog? - Have you tried holding down the Shift key and dragging to add to the selection? Instead of using the "Add to selection" button? - Is this happening only with the Polygonal Lasso tool?
See if this will help you. Use tools to make selections
There are many free tutorials for Elements 15. You may want to check . . . Photoshop Elements 15 -- Resources. Another source for free tutorials can be found within Elements -- eLive.
If you really want a paid for, structured online course, I highly recommend Learning Photoshop Elements 15.

Thank you for responding.
I have an image of our son and wife. I copied the background layer and on that copy selected the background in the image and then blurred it. I copied that layer and have three selected areas on the wife's face on this third layer and am now stuck. I have the option of "Add to Selection" on but can not add to the selection with the lasso tool, poly lasso tool, or refine edge. What ever I draw immediately disappears. Holding the shift key doesn't help.
If it matters I can click the eye on all the layers so they are all invisible and the three selected areas still show with the marching ants on the blank checkered image but none of image is there.
Not sure what you mean by "Use tools to make selections" How else could or would I other than by clicking on their icon in the column on the left.
I took a screen shot of all this and tried to copy here but it didn't take. Is there some way of adding screen shots to the messages?
I looked up the class you recommended. Looks like Lyndia. Do you know-do they have help for me when I get stuck like I am now? I am not using the Organizer as I am so used to Photos. I add my images from Photos to PSE. Don't know if that matters or not. Is there a way to be notified by email if anyone responds to this post? I could't find how to activate it if It is here.
I was involved with PSE 1, 2, and 3 when they first came out just after turn of century if I remember correctly and was a beta tester for 2 and 3. I'll describe my experience further if any are interested. My friend from then, Barbara Brundage, referred me here. She says there are some of the people from then on this site now. If so I would appreciate it if you identify yourselves. Would like to re-acquaint. Thanks Carl

Thanks! Now I understand what you are trying to do. I have an inkling what the problem is but it would help the troubleshooting to be able to see your layer stack.
That's just the title of the Adobe document I posted the link to earlier in this thread. It contains detailed information about the selection tools/processes in Elements.
helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/using/making-selections.html
After you take your screen shot, open Elements and go to File>Image from Clipboard. Your screen shot will open up in the workspace. Save it using Save for Web. Then, you can attach your file to your post using the "Add image to post via imgbb.com" button in the upper right corner of the message box.
I don't really know. You could contact them and ask about how much help they will provide.
Yes. Go to your Profile page. Then go to Edit Profile>Notifications . . . You can set up how you want to be notified.
I was a member on the now-closed Elements Village forum from 2008 until they closed. I am a big fan of Barbara Brundage; I have several of her Missing Manuals. A lot of what I know about Elements I owe it to her.

OK. Many Thanks! I have't gone anywhere. Just trying out stuff. I think some of my problems were that I wasn't used to the multiple steps needed before selecting. I may not have had the right image, right tool, right new vs. add vs. subtract, or right layer. The more I do the easier that is becoming. Am also working through the Kelby book and that's going pretty well. I do have two things I have not seen any reference to that I could use some help. 1) I have to go through several steps in Photos to get the image open in PSE 15, then save or save as to the desktop, then drag the image from the desktop back to Photos for the round trip. I really don't want to use the PSE 15 Organizer as I have spent some time with Photos getting things like I want. Is there any easier or quicker way to get images from Photos to PSE 15 and back? 2) Some times, when working with two or more images at the same time in PSE 15, they merge together when I don't want them to and then can't get them back apart. A) How can I prevent that from happening, and B) can I get them back separate by some method. I can't find by using the revert icon or history window to get them apart again. I have had to delete the combined image, go back to Photos and re-import both images again. Very frustrating and time consuming! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ! Carl

Hi Carl, glad to see you back and to hear about your progress. Good for you!
If you still need help with Refine Edge in Elements 15, you may want to check these tutorials. (NOTE: This updated Refine Edge was introduced back in Elements 11.)
Making Killer Selections in Photoshop Elements 11 Selecting Fine Detail Using Refine Edge with Photoshop Elements 11
Question 1:
I am not a Mac user; I am afraid I have no knowledge of using Apple's Photos with Elements. Hopefully a Mac user will come to the rescue.
Question 2:
I am not sure I understand what is happening. I don't see how Elements can merge two images without you telling this program to do it. Would you please give us more details? A screen shot of the workspace + layer stack would be helpful.
As to undoing the merging, . . . if you have not saved your file with the merging, i.e., if you still have the layered file, you can undo the merging by doing Cmmd-Z. You can also go to the History panel, right-click on the merging step and select "Delete".

On Question 1 -The Photos from Photo are stored in a "package" similar to a folder, hard to find even harder to open. The bottom line - unless you are extremely well verses on MAC, this will be a very comber sum process. If you are well versed on a MAC it is still comber sum.
From PSE you need to do a save as to a location (folder, desktop). Then do an import to photos. You cannot save from elements or photoshop to the photos library as it is not a standard folder.
The short answer to his question is - no.
On Question 2 - How can you work on two images at the same time? I have had a number of images open in elements on my mac, however you can only work on one at a time. What mode are you working in Expert, Guided, Quick? If you re-import them a second time and it works, what are you doing different from the first time?

Frank, thanks so much for coming to the rescue! We needed a Mac user in this thread. Carl is in good hands now.
