I am trying to refine the foreground (flower) before removing the background. I have highlighted that portion of the flower which was not included in the initial guided edit.
I now have color fill 1 and layer mask 8. How to I proceed (step by step) to complete this edit? I suspect this requires more knowledge using layers than I have now.

One way is to select the flower (it sounds like you've already done that), then just hit control-j (Windows) or command-j (Mac) to put it on its own layer, Then you can turn off the background by clicking on the eye icon on that layer, and drag the layers around in the order that suits you.
