BillieJean,
I am always hesitant to answer when someone asks this kind of question because in the end the decision one makes should be based on one's needs and interests. I may make a recommendation and it won't be something that can be incorporated into your scrapbooking workflow. All three offer free trials. I would suggest you download them and test the waters. In this way, you will be able to make an informed decision, one based on your needs and interests.
www.on1.com/ www.topazlabs.com/store www.filterforge.com/download/
Also, I am afraid we will be comparing apples and oranges. The ON1 program (Photo RAW) offers much more than the Topaz products or Filter Forge. ON1 Photo RAW will be better compared to Lightroom. As a matter of fact, this program is advertised as an "alternative" to Lightroom.

My answer (and opinion) - none of the above. You can get the following for free: On1 Effect Nik Collection before it disappears and becomes part of DXO. My recommendation would be Luminar it is available for both MAC andPC macphun.com/luminarI use it the majority of my time working on images. As a MAC user I have used this for about 2 years. They have a large selection of FREE preset and very powerful array of tools. It can be used both as a standalone product and as a plugin for Lightroom, Elements or Photoshop. They are even stating that it will have a catalog feature next year. They are also advertising this as a replacement for Lightroom. With their Black Friday Deal it's $69.

Lillias, you could also check on FB. Topaz has a users group, plus individual groups for some of their products. This would give you an idea of how people use the software to enhance their pictures. Filterforge may have a group as well.

Filterforge may have a group as well. They also have a Gallery on their website. The Author's Comments will provide information on which filters were used, how they were used, etc., etc.

Thank you Sepiana, Frank and Helen for your responses. I much appreciate your replies.
Frank this is going to make me seem stupid - but - I actually have both the On1 Effect and the Nik Collection and forget to use them but I've heard so much about the others that I wondered if there was something I was missing. I've also heard about Luminar. So I have plenty of food for thought.

BillieJean, ON1 Photo RAW is a photo-editing program consisting of several modules and Effects is one of them -- Browse, Develop, Effects, Layers, Resize.

I've been a long time user of photoshop elements starting with ver 3, and updating every 2nd version to my present ver 15. I also have lightroom ver 3.6 which is long overdue to upgrade. I realize I can still get stand alone versions, but for how long, as Adobe are really pushing the cloud versions, which I don't want any part of!! I've received a number of emails about On 1 Raw, which look very interesting, and from what I can gather would be a good fit for replacing LR and possibly PSE I would appreciate all comments from the group, on whether this would be a good move
Thanks

As I am using both PS and LR CC, I cannot really comment on any alternatives, but I know there are others on here that use them and would be able to offer their opinions.

I have a Creative Cloud subscription and heavily use LR. I also have On1 and Topaz. The new Topaz Studio product is interesting in that it offers a fair amount of free functionality and then you can add on the modules you want. They also have a fantastic pay-once, get free upgrades forever policy. That said, I haven't really worked much with the Studio product yet. I do really like On1, although I find the product not as stable as the Adobe products. I don't use it to replace LR, but it certainly looks like it could.

Thanks Sepiana, I'm planning to go with the ON 1 package deal they are offering right now, it looks like a good option. I'm waiting for their reply to a couple of questions I sent them. Have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Years to you and your family By the way, because of all your help on this site, you can have more than one "COFFEE" on New Years Eve (The dark glasses are for the next day!!!)

Wayne, you will be pleased with your decision. I have been a loyal customer of ON1 products since 2008. On the whole, I am very satisfied with Photo RAW. However, I do agree with what Andy said earlier in this thread. It is not as stable as the Adobe products; also, I don't use it as replacement for Lightroom. On the upside, their Customer Service is a five-star one. Thanks for the New Year's wishes! I wish the same to you and yours. -- Feliz e Próspero Ano Novo!
Your wish is my command! I have already stocked up on the necessary ingredients to make that special Brazilian coffee (which you and I are so fond of).
As a side note, I am afraid I am going to really need those dark glasses. I have also stocked up on what is needed to make caipirinha.
