Create Text Portrait poster
The video (link above) from Blue Lightning TV is for the full PS.
The instructions below relate to my adaptation for doing this with PSE.
1. Open a photo of someone to use for this project. The best result will be obtained with the subject looking straight into the camera– if coloured desaturate it. Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+U.
2. Select your subject using method of choice to separate it from its background.
Use Refine Edge to fine tune the selection and output to New Layer with Layer Mask.
3. Create a new document. I used the size of 12” wide x 16” high and Background colour Black. If you want to print it out make the resolution 300pixels per inch.
4. Drag your face image onto the black background and using the transform tool making sure you have Constrain Proportions ticked drag out the image to fill the document as you see here.
5. Adjust the brightness/contrast of your image press Ctrl/Cmd+L to bring up your Levels dialogue.
Adjust the sliders until the shadows of the face are darker and the brighter parts of the face are bright enough. Click ok.
6. We are going to place our text on the side of the face which is brightest.
Go to View and make sure Rulers and Snap To Guides are ticked.
Go to the ruler on the left and drag out a guide line to the centre of your document. Because you have snap checked it should snap in place.
7. Get your rectangular selection tool and drag out a selection over the half of the document where the text will be placed making sure it snaps to the centre guide line.
Click the new layer icon to make a new layer.
In this new empty layer we will fill the selection with black. Make sure your foreground colour is black and press Alt/Opt+Delete then press Ctrl/Cmd+D to deselect.
Your layers panel should now look like this.
8. Now remove the centre guide from your page by going to View and take the check out of Guides.
9. Open your list of fonts and choose a fairly thick font. I chose Gadugi Bold for my text.
If the text will be on the left side of your picture click the align right icon.
If the text will be on the right side of your picture click the align left icon.
Choose white for the colour of your text.
10. Place your cursor near the top middle of your document and type out the first two lines of your text.
Check your leading to keep the space tight between the lines. Then continue to type out the rest of your text.
To resize it open your transform tool and drag it out from a corner point till you are happy with its position.
Drag your block of text so it’s almost touching the edge of your black background.
11. Ctrl/Cmd click on the thumbnail of your text in the layers panel to make a selection of your text shape.
Click on the eyeball next to the layer to hide the text.
12. Make the black rectangular shape active in the layers and press the delete key on your keyboard to delete the area inside the selection. Then deselect.
13. If there are areas that are a bit hard to read then go to the Layers Panel and make the face active.
Using the dodge tool brush over the shadows to taste.
14. Finish off the page with a thin frame.
Create a new layer and fill with white. Reduce opacity to zero.
Drag out a rectangular selection just inside the borders of your page
and create a new layer.
Go to Edit>Stroke Selection. For the size I chose 5pixels and a soft gray colour and Inside location.Finished layers panel…
