Dear all,

I have a question previously posted at Elements Village.
The problem is that when I start the PSE12 I can not chose the Catalog that I have previously made that was working fine until one day.
If I double click catalog.pse12db, PSE report that the catalog is either corrupt or out of date and can not be updated.

At the Elements Village the last reply was from Micheal B and then I went for vacation and Elements Village shut down.

The path you give here can't be explained. There is no reason for an Organizer catalog to be situated there, with 'Adobe Photoshop CS6' subfolders.

Probably I have indicated this location as customized location for the catalog.

Also, a catalog named 'My Catalog 1 1' means that it has been already renamed with the suffix 1 1 and converted to a newer Elements format, which means its contents should show a version 11 or older catalog. This 'My Catalog 1 1' can't show a 'catalog.pse12db' database file, unless it has been converted from a version 13 organizer. It should show a 'catalog.pse11db' catalog for instance.

The name of the catalog 'My Catalog 1 1' was generated in one of the previous versions of PSE where in the case that you had a catalog already and you make a new one the first proposed file name would be 'My Catalog 1 1'. I dont remember when I have started with this catalog but it could PSE4, then PSE7 and currently PSE12
The catalog was converted from some previous version. I doubt that it was PSE 13. I dont get why now it should show 'catalog.pse11db'? Also, to remind you, the catalog was working fine before.

That said, a catalog folder containing a 'catalog.pse12db' can have been copied anywhere on your computer. That does not make it unusable, its contents are not changed even if the copy or move have been made by error; double clicking on that file (while the organizer is not open) should open the organizer with that catalog in 'custom' location.

In summary, the catalog is in the custom location.
If I double click on that file (while the organizer is not open) the organizer does not open.
When I go to manage catalogs and browse to the location of my catalog location, the catalog name does not appear.

It could be that I misunderstood something, and if so please let me know. As of now, I have no idea how to fix it.

What happens if you open the catalog manager in PSE13, then click on the convert button and browse to the catalog.pse12db file?

By the way, downloading a trial version of PSE13 could be considered if your OS is not XP or Vista.

So, the message indicates a 'corrupt' catalog folder.
I would first run the following test:
- create a new folder somewhere where you copy only the catalog.pse12db file (the database component in the folder).
- double click it and tell us what happens.

This is to check if the 'corruption' is in the database itself or in the other components of the catalog folder.
If the database itself is ok, you should recover your tagging and albums, but you would lose people recognition, visual similarity and other features (which I don't use...)
The thumbnail cache and other necessary files and subfolders in the catalog will be recreated automatically.

If you still get a 'corrupt' file error, start the organizer with the shift key pressed and in the dialog, click the 'custom' radio button and highlight the new catalog, then click on the 'repair' button.

First break through!!!

I have copy-pasted the file into another folder and the PSE is started.
There are no information in the catalog. No tags and no files. I suppose that this is to be expected since all the other files are in different folder.
So now, when this is done, what is the next step?

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!

After two months and seriously thinking to forget about PSE and my catalog which I am maintaining since 2008.
The solution was really easy.

I took all the files from the Catalog and moved it to a new folder :>
What was the reason I dont know and to be honest I dont care.

Your disk may be a little flaky. Run a chkdsk and see if you have any bad spots. This is a DOS command. If you hve never run one let me know and I will put together a how to.

I have given up on email notifications. I found that by the time I received them I had already come to the website & checked, so I disabled them.

Yes, I discovered the same thing. Notifications are only on a daily basis for now. Hopefully, one day, we can get them in a more timely manner. Overall, I feel the forum is doing well. People are slowly finding us. It will be a while.

I am sorry I did not answer sooner, I have been rather busy lately...
Sue's advice was very good as usual!
A possible explanation for how your workaround was successful:
Nesting the catalog folder within your picture folder tree often leads to such 'bizarre' behaviours, as noted by expert John R Ellis. That's why I always advise to create of move catalog outside the pictures folder tree.
