Recently moved on from Google Picasa to PSE15 and Silver Efex Pro. Trying to learn something more than just clicking "B&W"

Welcome to the forum len. I really like your image and b&w processing, although I personally might have boosted the exposure just a bit.

Thank you for your comment, Sydney. I used a preset and then tweaked it up a bit. I'll try your suggestion and see how that looks. Thanks!

Hi Len and welcome to PSE&M. I hope your experience here will be enjoyable and helpful. I like your image and the fact it has a full tonal range as shown by its histogram. So with reference to Sydney's observation, on my screen the exposure is ok but the shadows might be a little dark, also as shown by the image's histogram. But bear in mind, in case you are not aware, that the colours, tones, brightness etc you see on your screen for any given image will most likely not be exactly the same as people viewing it on their screens because of the reasons I mention in my " Why Photos Don't Look The Same On All Screens" thread. Just some food for thought and see you in the soup

I like the way you have used the lobster traps to compose your image. Welcome from me as well.

Hi Len Great composition of a pleasing subject. Thanks. (I am always attracted to ocean sides and wharves etc, but an inland flatlander so don't see them often.) The B&W treatment works well for the scene as others have noted. I too think the darks could be a tad lighter. Hope this side comment is okay with the mods. I really like using the following to convert to B&W because it allows good control over mid tones (this will have be posted elsewhere by others): Foreground color set to black and background color to white (but this is not critical as there is an way to change colors later...) Also, it's a good idea to get the blacks and whites "correct" on the original color image before going through this process. Anyway, you might find it handy to play with. Layers >> New adjustment layer >> Gradient map. A new floating "gradient map" window will pop up and you click on it to get into another window to allow adjustments. This creates a new layer and the image will have to be flattened once happy. It can be fussy, but does work well. Thanks for sharing your lobster dock image. Nice. Clive

Welcome from me, too, Len. Hope you enjoy using PSE. I recently upgraded to 15, too. (from 11).
