I am having problems with "Save for Web" freezing up and refusing to respond.
About half the time, my "Save for Web" performs to perfection; however, the rest of the time it works very draggy and takes spells of freezing up.
The first indication that it is not going to cooperate is, when I make all my choices and click "OKAY" and the "SAVE" box appears, the "save" box shows only the file names under where the thumbnails should be, but with no thumbnails.
I edit the file name and click "Save" and it does nothing; wait a spell and click "Save" again, at which point either it responds, saves, and exits; I can live with that; OR, sometimes upon this second click "Save", the box disappears as if it worked, but the full-screen "Save for Web" dialogue box remains and will not respond to anything.
When it does this, it does not save the file.
I can click cancel until I turn blue and nothing happens.
If I mouse over the editor icon in the task bar, it shows hidden behind the dialogue box that refuses to close a message box that says "Could not complete this operation. There was not enough memory available."
I cannot imagine there not being plenty of memory available, as I close all unnecessary programs and should have all kinds of space in my drives.
I click the icon thumbnail of the message box and it then shows up in front of everything else where I click "Okay", at which everything visible in the "Save for Web" dialogue disappears, but the now featureless dialogue remains covering the screen with a little blue circle going round and round.
After about five minutes of the blue circle, another message appears giving me the option to keep trying or close the program; "keep trying" only leads to another five minutes of the blue circle; "close the program" eventually closes the editor --- and anything that may happen to be still in the editor.
What can I do to fix this ?
Thanks.

How much RAM do you have on your machine?

How much RAM do you have on your machine? I just checked "SYSTEM" and it says "(RAM) 4.0GB 3.58GB usable"

- Which version of Photoshop Elements are you using? - When you go under Edit: Preferences: Performance, what is the information under Memory Usage?

I just checked "SYSTEM" and it says "(RAM) 4.0GB 3.58GB usable" I believe 4 GB RAM should be more than enough to run Elements 7. This program is a 32-bit application even when installed on a 64-bit OS. This means that it is limited to how much RAM it can use even if you have lots of RAM. The maximum RAM available to Elements 7 is about 4 GB (to be more precise, 3.2 GB). However, lots of RAM will benefit your computer as a whole and any 64-bit application you have installed.
You may want to check another kind of memory -- the scratch disk memory. Elements will use this memory when your OS doesn't have enough RAM to perform some editing tasks. Also, there are other areas (history, cache, etc.) which can be modified to help Elements perform more efficiently.

Recently, when I was having a different episode or other, you provided and I followed those instructions to "optimize" my performance. I reduced the "undo" history from I believe 50 to 25, and made certain everything else was set for best performance. Now that I think about it, a few days ago, I deleted my editor preferences; I might should investigate, as that may have put everything I had optimized back to default settings. Thanks so much.

The Preferences file is where Elements keeps track of your preferred settings. When you delete this file, Elements will automatically generate a replacement file. The only downside is that the replacement file will have the settings back to the default. This means that you will have to redo any changes you made.
