One of my youngest Granddaughter she cheers me up no end. Taken indoors by window light then the background replaced using elements and on one, this is one of my favourites that was taken at Xmas. I apologise if this has been seen before on EV as my memory is not that good these days.

Paul,
That is beautiful. I am enjoying your images so much. Wish I could get such good pictures of my grandchildren. They are very unwilling subjects!

That is awesome in all aspects. How do you separate the individual stray strands of hair and sweater fuzz when replacing a background ? I have Elements 7 and, try as I may with every tool available, have not yet been able to do half so well.

I'm taking a stab at this as I'm not experienced user of PSE but I think it's possibly the use of Refine Edge feature which, I think, was introduced to PSE in v11. I've only had v11 and v12 so I've not used versions prior to that hence I can't be certain. Certainly, Refine Edge helps enormously with selection of some detail but it will largely depend on what the background is too. I've found all the tutorials/videos showing how to select fly-away hair have a light coloured and plain background which makes it so easy (relatively) This article/tutorial shows how Refine Edge can be used for selecting hair - www.digitalcameraworld.com/2013/01/26/photoshop-effects-how-to-use-refine-edge-to-add-a-new-background/ Obviously, there are loads more tutorials. This one will give you an idea of how Paul may have got such an excellent result in selection However, that's assuming Paul was using PSE at the time. Maybe he was using a different piece of software?

Just adding some clarification.
The Refine Edge feature is nothing new in Elements. However, starting with Elements 11 Adobe introduced a new version of this feature. Elements now has an updated, deluxe version, brought over from Photoshop. This new Refine Edge makes it quite easy to extract fuzzy animals or people with flyway hair and enables you to get even the most fine details in your selection.
Keep in mind that the link posted earlier in this thread is all about Refine Edge in Elements 11 and above. Therefore, some of the information will not be applicable to earlier versions of Elements.

Thanks for coming in with your clarification, Sepiana I appreciate that, as I'm not experienced in all these aspects, as you know I had hoped you'd be along soon Julie

Thank you for the comments guys. Has I said in the original I use Elements with OnOne perfect effects as a plugin, here I used Perfect masking but as usual with automated removal with awkward backgrounds I still had to use Elements to finish the masking of.
