I just downloaded the free version. I double click on a photo, it appears on the screen, click on layers or effect and boom, blown out of the program! What am I missing? The install wizard did it's thing, I answered all the install questions. If I look in my downloads, I do not see it listed, oddly enough. I do see it listed in my programs86 area and I have the icon on my desktop. I am not a computer person.

Check especially that your CPU (processor), RAM (memory) and video card meet the recommended specs in the above link.

I don't know how old your card is but the older models did not have dedicated RAM on the card itself. They shared the computer's RAM. Video cards with dedicated RAM have much superior performance generally.
The ON1 "recommended" specs state you should have at least 1G of dedicated video RAM on your card. I suspect yours doesn't.
To confirm if your card has dedicated or is using shared RAM with your computer, run dxdiag and then click the Display tab and check the info there.
Hopefully you have the latest or very recent model of your card and hopefully it will have dedicated RAM of at least 1GB.

I did not sit for 45 minutes and watch for it. I get no message other than On1 has stopped working and it shuts down as soon as I click anywhere on the screen. I looked at the article you mention and when I "update" the driver it says it's ok??? "windows has determined the software is up to date for this device"

... I don't know what I am looking at!!??
It shows that your card has access to a total (any dedicated + shared with your computer's RAM) memory of just 1.792GB.
Unfortunately it doesn't break the total memory into dedicated ram actually on the card and system ram. But with a total of only ~1.8GB I doubt very strongly the card will have the recommended 1GB of dedicated RAM. You might be lucky and your card might have the minimum required of 256MB of RAM, and then it might not.
Even if you have the minimum RAM on your card, it doesn't mean the app will still necessarily work and run. Cards with supposedly the same specs. from different video card manufacturers will perform differently because of the differences in their design.
To see how much dedicated RAM is actually on your card you could try the following, based on Win 7 but later OSs should be similar.
1. On your desktop click Start -> Control Panel
2. Click Appearance and Personalization -> Adjust Screen Resolution
3. On the right hand side of the window that opens up, click Advanced Settings
4. In the Adapter tab of window that pops up, you will see value for "Dedicated Video Memory". That value tells you how much actual RAM is on the video card itself. It needs to be a minimum of 256MB or recommended 1GB.
From the information/symptoms you have provided so far it appears to me that your video card is either under resourced/powered or at the minimum specs required by ON1. If it turns out it is under resourced, then trying to get ON1 to run without crashing, as you described, when you are trying to do something that the card cannot handle might be a waste of time and the only real solution could be to upgrade your video card. But hopefully you will be lucky and On1 support might be able to provide a way to get ON1 running without crashing on your pc.

My computer is "old" by today's standards. I will wait for them to answer my support inquiry. It is not the end of the world not being able to use On1. I have my hands full with Lightroom, Photoshop and PSE!! The instructor for a class I will be taking suggested downloading the free version. It is not required by any means. Thank you for your response!

No problem blackmutt.
They will probably ask you how much dedicated memory your card has. At least now you know how to find it.

I will wait for them to answer my support inquiry. Judy,
Pleased to hear you contacted ON1 Support. I am a firm believer in going directly to the source. After all, the ON1 team created this product; they are better qualified to tackle any problems that may arise.
I have been a ON1 customer since 2008 (the days of ON1 + PET + EV). Their Tech Support is a five-star one.
