On my way to photograph the falls yesterday morning (Sept 3) I passed the old house. The morning light on the house was perfect and the background dark clouds behind made the house stand out well .. to my eye anyway. Clive

I find ramshackle old buildings to be very attractive. In my opinion, I think the colours all blend in so well in your photo Clive.

While I like this one Clive, I prefer the B/W versions that to me speak more to the deterioration of the old house. Nice addition to your collection, though.

Talk about Little House on the Prairie! Love the contrast between the green and gold tones vs the darkening sky. Great capture, Clive. I must admit though, I think I would prefer it without the pale yellow frame around it as I think it would stand out perfectly on its own merits.

Thanks Helen. You are correct: these bldgs look better in sepia or B&W. I was smitten by the lighting so had to share. I'll convert a couple to BW and sepia and post tonight. Sydney. Thanks. "the contrast between the green and gold tones vs the darkening sky. " Yes, it attracted me. Thanks for the comment on the yellowish mat. White or nothing. I should know better because we have a framed photo of this old house and I made the mat pale pale blue to blend with the colors in the winter scene....mistake. White mats or none at all. I am a slow learner. Clive

Helen This is neither B&W or sepia. Playing. Comments on the strange tone welcome. I made the pointillism "drawing" for an art sale this summer. (Don't think I posted it here before.) This is not a Photoshop creation. It has hand "drawn" with a few thousands pen dots. (Wonder what normal people do in their spare time? ) Clive

Hi Clive ... The morning light on the house was perfect and the background dark clouds behind made the house stand out well .. to my eye anyway. ... and to my eye as well....I see exactly what you mean. If I had my camera in hand when walking past that scene, there is no way I would be able to walk past without taking some shots I agree with whippet and Sydney, the colour tones created by the light blend together really well. But hmmmmmm...........the thing that first hits me when I look at the image is the composition. From your comments in your OP I assume you are trying to highlight both the clouds and the house and how they compliment each other and your image does that but my gut feeling is that maybe another option could be to primarily highlight either the house or background. I guess I am going back to the brief discussion we had yesterday regarding taking photos from various vantage points in your waterfalls posts. I don't know how close you can walk to the house, but if you didn't already, perhaps the next time you walk past the house maybe take some shots closer in from different angles and filling most of the frame to highlight the texture in the old timber and to highlight the slant/lean in the structure (it looks like it could fall over before you get a chance to photograph it again ). Getting closer might also provide an opportunity to capture through the doors and windows what is still inside the house. The posts might be able to be used as a foreground and maybe leading lines to the house? Anyway, as always, just my 2c worth of some food for thought and a really nice photo as is

Clive, I'm not a good person to ask about toning as I only use three.....b/w natural, selenium and a split one that I learned from Lenswork magazine.
Can't even imagine how much patience it took to complete your pointillism image!
Love Bailey's idea for close-ups and through the window shots if you can get that close.
You have found a wonderful subject and I love seeing all of your versions!

Thanks Bailey and Helen. It's a good subject and we drive by it every time we go in and out of our summer lot. I can get within 30 feet of the house without trespassing...public road allowance. The owner is a nice man, but people have been stripping wood off the house, so it is posted and I don't blame him. Will take some more before we close up for the season. Clive
