It's the 1st Thursday of the month and time for a new B&W Challenge. The theme this month was inspired by a shot I took a few weeks back in the mountains. When editing the 1st image shown below I suddenly noticed the various markings on the rocks used in the building of the inukshuk and I thought that having converted it to B&W really brought those markings out. So, this month I would like you to create photos of anything stone related; take a look at texture, shape, dark/light colours, and markings, man-made or nature's own, when you look at your subject(s). As always, I converted my photos by using LR CC, starting with a basic B&W preset, and then playing around with the different sliders until I was happy with what I saw. When you share your photos with us please let us know what software you used for your conversion and/or settings. Have fun and I look forward to seeing your stone photos!     |

Writing-on-Stone Park, Alberta 2009. (We are allowed to use oldies, right?) Opened in ACR to tweak levels and contrast; converted to BW using new adjustment layer ... gradient map. Fiddle fiddle. Original shot as jpeg and using a polarizer. The sky is very dark in the color version and chose to not lightening it here ... changing contrast darkened it some. I like the near-back sky. Luckstone Quarry in VA. On1 PR used for processing. Basic tonal adjustments made in develop. Tone enhancer to darken sky, dynamic contrast applied to rock wall, and B&W filter from effects.  |

The large rock in the creek is locally called The Round Rock. Back in the day, the rocky creek bottom provided stones for building bridges, roads, and buildings. preview.ibb.co/f04y9e/NIK8326_copy.jpg |

This is The Balconies, Grampians National Park.
I created the B&W by first using the B&W Adjustment Layer in Elements+ and then added a Levels Adjustment Layer masking in, with a brush of various shades of grey, just The Balconies rock formation to make it pop out a bit more from the background.
I have seen photos online where people have actually climbed down to sit on the bottom ledge, but there is no way you would ever get me to do that.

Here is a B/W conversion of a beautiful stone church that I took on our recent trip to Colorado. I will look to photograph some new images for this challenge in the weeks ahead. I went for the black sky too, Clive! Conversion using Silver Efex.  |

Rocky outcrop near Pincher Creek, Alberta. September 8, 2018 Shot as raw using polarizing filter. Converted resulting jpg using new adj layer and gradient map. Played with the sky to darken more. Hardened the image with clarity slider to semi faux HDR.  |
