This is FYI info.
I run Pse14 on an HP Envy Desktop with an Intel i7-7700 quad core processor. 16gig RAM Before this I had always used Pse10 (which is the reason for my forum identity as pse10ch). Pse10 was so stable. Never had any probs. When tools got a little sluggish, I could employ the reset tool(s) button and it was restored. However, PSE14 has been sluggish, slow at times, and just last night crashed. So, I of course googled the topic and found that PSe14 has a reputation as being unstable. (here is a thread where the bad rep of PSE14 is mentioned. most of these complaints are about geo tagging, but some are generic).
Therefore, the question arises: If I do not want to fight with PSE14, what is the general consensus regarding the most stable version after 14? If such a thing exists. I am a compositor (as most of you are, I assume.) So, I am interested in stability and the best selection and refining tools (aren't we all?). Don't care much or at all for new fancy one button stuff.
PS. I am going to uninstall and reinstall the 14 to see if that helps which is the nice thing about having the disc. When I installed the 14 on this computer, I think, to my surprise, Adobe did a big update on top of it. I thought it would make it better. Don't know if this is the "patch 1" that someone said "you are better off without." I had to log in to finish the install. So, they know what is going on.
Chuck
PSS. I can still use my pse10 if users think there is not real advantage to change although I did find the refine edge a little more useful in 14

Sorry you're having trouble with PSE14. I skipped that version and went from 13 to 15. I've had absolutely 0 problems with PSE15, FWIW.

Hi Chuck,
I'm not sure why you are having problems with PSE 14 on your desktop. I run PSE 14 on my desktop (Intel Core i7 cpu, 16GB RAM, Nvidia video card) and it has always run smoothly without issues.
The only time I might have issues with PSE 14 is on my travelling laptop (Intel Core i3 cpu, 4GB RAM and integrated graphics). On my laptop PSE 14 runs a little slower but still satisfactorily when doing just photo edits on 1-3 images max. at a time. From experience, if I try to stitch any more than 4 photos together for a panorama, PSE will freeze up. Doing the same stitching on my desktop works fine. So, for me, the freezing up issue of PSE14 on my laptop is a hardware problem, not a problem with PSE itself.

Chuck,
I usually fret when I am asked this question. I doubt we could have a general consensus on this issue. There are so many variables which can affect the stability of any given version of Elements -- operating system, computer specs, installation process, etc, etc.
Yes, that seems to be the case. There have been lots of reports on the Adobe Photoshop Elements forums about performance issues with this version. michelb , who is also an ACP on the Adobe forums, is best qualified to elaborate on this.
You mentioned in another thread you have Windows 10. This could be another variable affecting the performance of PSE 14 -- the Windows 10 (v 1803) update. You may want to check this thread. The focus of the discussion/feedback is on PSE 15 and PSE 2018 but the suggestions will also apply to PSE 14.
Elements and the new Windows 10 (April - v 1803) update
Adobe has been known to release patches/updates to address issues (bugs) which are severe enough to the point of crippling Elements performance. This was the case with the PSE 14.1 update released Dec 2015. It contains performance-related improvements as well as fixes for bugs. These fixes are for both stability-related bugs and for other kinds.
Photoshop Elements 14.1 Update
You may want to keep this in mind:
- Install PSE 14 as administrator.
- The first time you launch PSE 14, do it as administrator by right-clicking on the desktop shortcut and selecting "Run as administrator". Check to see how this program is behaving. If everything is OK, then, next time launch it as a standard user.
Based on my own experience with both PSE 10 and PSE 14, my suggestion is . . . give PSE 14 a chance. For starters, . . .
- Back in PSE 11, Adobe did a major overhaul of this program.
- Refine Edge in PSE 14 is several notches above the one in PSE 10. Starting with PSE 11, Adobe brought over this feature from Photoshop. It is a "deluxe" Refine Edge!
- If you are into using actions (.atn files), the process is much easier in PSE 14. There is no longer the need to install them in the photo effects folder, delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file, etc. You just load the .atn files via the Actions panel or the Effects panel.
Last but not least, . . .
You may also want to keep PSE 10 around. Back in PSE 12, Adobe removed some features. So, for example, if you like the Lighting Effects filter, you will need to go back to PSE 10.
What features from previous versions are not available in Adobe Photoshop Elements 12?
