I think this is a neat and sometimes useful feature in GIMP = color-coded layers ! The GIMP layer palette: The same layers drag/dropped into the parent image in Elements 7: I find it interesting that GIMP's color-coding carries over into Elements; this sort of says to me that there is no good reason why the layer stack in Elements couldn't also have color-coding capability; maybe it has all along and I just have not been smart enough to find it. I am often jumping back and forth between Elements 7 and GIMP; GIMP has the best curves feature that I have yet found and GIMP's shadows/highlights is superior to Elements. There are a tremendous amount of useful and well-thought-out features in GIMP; one that really stands out is that GIMP will allow other maneuvers when a dialogue box is open, whereas Elements will not; for instance, you can make changes in the layer stack, select a different layer, even rename a layer, while the levels or curves or whatever dialogue box is active. I cannot count the times in Elements that I have had to cancel the Edit > Fill command and start over because I had forgotten to select the mask instead of the image.

It's available, at least in PSE15 and PSE2018 (I am not at home, so I don't know when that has been available first). Just right click on the layer in the layer palette.

What is the reason for having layer colour codes?
Yes Michel, it is in PSE 15. I have just tried it.

What is the reason for having layer colour codes? Yes Michel, it is in PSE 15. I have just tried it. The ability is not there in E7 or E12. The way I would use them would be to identify a color with a particular type layer that I would often be returning to for whatever reason; rather than hunt for it by name, just look for the color that I associate with it.
