I shudder to think what this world will be like in 50 years time, or much less even .

Sadly today it is hard to find a source that can be trusted in reporting the news. Everything seems biased and there doesn't seem to be much of an attempt to evaluate a source. Compromise or attempting to understand another viewpoint has given way to extremism. I agree with your first sentence. The article you referenced is certainly disturbing. I can see where this would be especially interesting to someone with your background.

I saw the fake Obama a while back and was shocked at how convincing the presentation was.
So how much time does one invest in order to discover what is real on the news? What avenues does one investigate?

Quite true. FWIW, here are four resources that are dedicated to providing fair, nonpartisan election information (according to the October issue of the AARP Bulletin):
Additionally, I use the following for researching random posts on social media like Facebook:
If nothing else, these may serve as good starting points for your own research. In these times it falls on us to be vigilant about what we share and circumspect in what we believe.

Thank you for your feedback and thoughts everyone - all valid points and food for thought.
One worrying aspect is that if this really takes off, in the future video evidence of anything will have much less weight unless it can be authenticated without doubt. A world leader, celebrity, person in authority or whoever could be caught on video doing/saying something seriously wrong or inappropriate and their first defence will be that it didn't happen; the video is a deepfake.

Wow, that is super scary with how fast AI is progressing and what can be done these days. There will come a point where we don't know what is real and what isn't.

Yes it's really scary allready
The first two are fairly easy to pick the fake video. Good luck after that! I had no idea which to pick and guessed wrong most of the time.

When I see the way the world is going there are times when I'm glad I'm at this end of my life. I really fear for our young folks.

To be totally honest, I think the same thing some times. Unfortunately the world is not changing for the better. It is on a path to self destruction in just about every sense - morally, ethically, politically, climatically etc.

Thanks for sharing this information. Very serious indeed. It's like photoshop for videos. It's hard to know if an image/photo is real because the first thought is "It must be photoshopped." So we question photographic evidence. Now it's fake or "photoshopped" videos. Yes, the future ramifications are very troubling.
