I have purchased some png files but pse won't open them - error message says they are not the right type of file. If a convert them to jpeg they don't retain the transparency. Dopes anyone know how I can convert them to something pse will recognised but still retain the transparent background. Any help would be very much appreciated.

PSD files save transparency and there is an option with tiff files to do so. Elements should open a PNG. What version of elements are you on.

The jpeg format does not support transparency. Elements can use the PNG format, I have no idea what your problem might be.

Yes, I can open PNG files in version 13. In a quick search I found that PNG was a supported filetype at least as far back as v6.

What version of elements are you on. Shaun, I've just seen that Fraxa is using PSE v7 - that's what she has stated in another thread 'Layer Styles'

Thanks for your input everyone. I've reinstalled the programme and the png files now open perfectly so one problem solved. However I still can't access my 3rd party layer styles.
