Looking around at the photos on this web site and others I, like everyone else, occassionally come across some really stunning photos.....But then I sometimes also think to myself, when looking at some of these photos, "What on earth was the poster thinking when he/she posted the photo. Are they not concerned about privacy?".
The most common type of photo that gets me scratching my head in wonderment is portraits, photos of young kids and the like.
I sense that sometimes people when posting photos, or anything for that matter, online forget they are not in a 1 on 1 communication environment but are actually making their photo viewable and downloadable (whether they like it or not) by every single person on the planet with access to the Internet.
You wouldn't open the front door of your house and let total strangers go through and take photos of anything they like in your house but that is essentially what people are doing when they post photos in a publically accessible online environment.
Within my family it is a strict taboo to post online photos of direct and/or extended family members.
I feel many people forget that notwithstanding copyright laws it is impossible to stop anyone taking a copy of an online photo they like and doing what they like with it. For example: extracting elements from the photo and putting them into other photos for their own purposes, slapping their own watermark on a photo and claiming it to be theirs when adding it to their online galleries or entering it in a competition or whatever....and so on.
I would be furious if I saw an image of a family member superimposed onto another image by someone else without my or the family member's permission.
Coming from a web site development background maybe I am more sceptical about what I see on the Internet and who really owns what and so I try to make people who are less Internet savvy (through no fault of their own) more aware of the pros and cons of posting/publishing things online.
Just food for thought and I hope this helps someone
