My first snowy sighting in at least two years. A friend contacted me this afternoon about one near her house in the country. These owls breed in the Arctic and winter as far south as the northern US states. I belong to an Alberta wildlife FB group and dozens are being sighted all over. Nice. This female was perched atop a stack of old, round hay bales, looking for mice..and keeping an eye on me. She allowed me to get within about 20 meters. Was dull. It's about 12 minutes from the house, so I'll keep an eye out for her again...she might hang around or move along.

A beautiful capture! I know the bird photographers in NJ were very happy with the many opportunities they had to photograph them in our area last year.

Thanks Helen. Last winter was long and hard in the west and yet photographers were not posting as many as this year...guess it's been colder in the far North this year. One suspects they are more common when winters are bad. We've had a good run of weather (after no fall) and yet photographers are posting countless owls here.
