Backlighted Canada goose on lift off. December 22. About 200 geese had kept a small patch of water open...it froze over the next day. They flew up well, but the sun was almost directly behind. Had to torture the body to lighten it enough. Not the sharpest photo.

... Not the sharpest photo. Though still a very good shot Clive .......capturing birds in flight is most often not easy. I see in your exif data (click more exif data on the enlargement) you used a shutter speed of 1/1000s and ISO 250. Perhaps increasing the ISO to ~500 would give you a shutter speed of ~1/2000s which should produce a sharper image.
There shouldn't be any noticeable noise (or it should be easily removed if present) at ISO 500.

Thanks Bailey.
Was a "clutch shot" and no time to mess with settings.
Generally no noise well above ISO 500 ... under most circumstances. My everyday walkabout ISO is 250 in sunshine...varies.
Happy New Year!

Wonderful capture Clive, love those golden feather tips and the sparkle of the water droplets.

I love it, Clive. Were they heading west? If so, I shall keep a lookout for them.

Indeed headed west. Sun was to the south and they exited stage right, i.e. west. Hardly any geese around our town the past couple of days, but they are in the region because the river 20 km to the west stays more or less open all winter because of the water treatment plant etc. Before the city developed, the river would have frozen over most of the winter. Now the birds stay all winter and have for decades. Clive
