I don't know why, but I can't seem to keep it in my head how clipping masks work. I always have to do an experiment to rediscover that it is the underlying layer that clips out of the layer above it.

I use clipping masks all the time and I still make the mistake of putting the wrong layer on top. Good thing, I now immediately know why the clipping isn't working - instead of in the old days when I had to work at figuring why it didn't work.
When you use templates to do scrapbook pages, clipping is the main way you use them, so I have a lot of practice - and still I make the error.

Tom, you are not the only one; I also have the same problem. I came to a point that I printed a summarized version of this post and keep it at hand.
All About Clipping Masks And Adobe doesn’t make it any easier; they changed the shortcut. So, many times I end up grouping instead of clipping.

I’m sorry to hear they changed my most used shortcut. Not a problem now, but I plan to upgrade soon.
