Hi all, Using PSE9 (or later versions) is it possible to force a long caption onto two lines.
For example, with a photo in portrait mode the caption extends outside the photo into the black bands on the sides of the photo. I would like to be able to put the caption onto two lines so that it stays within the photo. Thanks, Robert

Robert Just hit enter where you want the text to wrap text below. You might have to do that 2 or 3 times for a longer caption. You can also create a text box with the writing tool and make a window that suits the width of the photo. Clive

Robert...not sure if PSE9 lets you create a flexible text box.

Hi Clive and Sepiana,
Thanks for the replies.
Unfortunately I was in too much of a rush with my original post and didn't make it clear that I want to use the built-in caption feature of PSE9, not the text tool to create my captions. Can these captions be forced onto two or more lines?

Can these captions be forced onto two or more lines? I may be wrong but I don't think you can. I tried it in all the versions of Elements I have (nine!). Elements wouldn't allow it.

Text boxes have been around as long as I can remember - I started with PSE4, but of course, I can't remember that far back - but I kinda think they've always been around.

Can these captions be forced onto two or more lines? The original advice - click return/enter at end of line - should start a new line. Type functions in all programs seem to follow the same rules as typewriters did. But then again, Sepiana said it didn't work. Maybe captioning is supposed to be used for only a few words, so this function is not built into it. Seems archaic. Now, I need to go and experiment with captioning to see how it works. I think part of your extra work problem can be alleviated with using copy/paste. At least then, you won't be retyping your info. Try it with captioning and see if you can copy paste there, too. If you are not familiar with copy/paste: Select Text - Control/Command C to copy
Go to project - click where you want text to appear (or draw your text box, if you haven't already done that) Control/Command V to paste
You can also use Edit/Copy, Edit/Paste
Text can be copied from just about any source, however, I have run into instances where text is copyrighted and they somehow prevent copying of text with some sort of code, but I seldom have run into this problem.

I don't think you can copy/paste text if you are using the Caption/Watermark option in Process Multiple Files. This option is quite limited.

I didn't try the multiple menu, but I tried captioning onto Preview on a single photo and in the limited time I 'played' I found it limiting.
I did, however, find that you can hit return/enter and a new line will be started. You can click it multiple times to get more spaces between your lines - and you can make multiple lines of text.
And if you highlight the word 'text' when you start, you can paste text you've copied from other sources, then put your cursor after any word and click enter/return and the text will go to the next line.
I still maintain using PSE's text tool (and a text box, if you want versatility) - is the best option - but I know that doesn't address multiple files.
Make sure you save your photoshop project as a jpg so those who do not have Photoshop can view the project.

Thanks everyone.
Janice, You said I did, however, find that you can hit return/enter and a new line will be started. You can click it multiple times to get more spaces between your lines - and you can make multiple lines of text. Was that using the Text tool or the Add Caption option (and if the latter, how did you do it - I couldn't get multiple lines).
Cheers,
Robert

Robert - I was using captioning in Preview - which I believe is a function of my Mac.
After I played a bit, I came to the conclusion that this may not be where you were working on captioning. Therefore, my experience may not have anything to do with your problem.
If there is another place - say in Photoshop Elements -where there is the ability to do captioning, I don't know how to access it. Sorry, if I misled you.
However, as I stated before, I've never run into a problem using the same basic methods of text editing in any format or software I've ever used.
And I stand by my suggestion that the easiest and most versatile way to do what you want to do is by using the Text Tool in PSE. Just make sure to save your project as a jpg if you want to send it on to others who do not use Photoshop software.

The "Caption" being discussed in this thread is the one in PSE's Process Multiple Files feature (File>Process Multiple Files>Labels>Caption/Watermark).
Choices:
- Text position. - Font type, size, and color. - Text opacity.
Limitation:
The text length in the Custom Text box seems to be limited to a single-line. PSE will stop entering your text when that limit is reached. If you have the volume on, you will hear a beep. There is no provision for using the Copy/Paste/Text box or the Paragraph Text technique.
Process Multiple Files (Help) Processing Multiple Files (The Missing Manual, Barbara Brundage)
NOTE: This is the Caption feature being discussed in another thread -- Permanent Captions

I don't think you can copy/paste text if you are using the Caption/Watermark option in Process Multiple Files. Did you actually try it before posting?......because you actually can, at least in my PSE 14 In the Organiser, I open the caption for an image. I then open the image in the editor and select File->Process Multiple Files. In the Process Multiple Files dialogue box I select Watermark in the Labels panel. I then copy the caption in the Organiser into the Custom Text box under Watermarks. Works flawlessly.

Hi Bailey,
It worked for me too with PSE9.
Although the positioning options are limited in the Dialog box, because the watermark is on a layer I was able to move it to where I wanted it. A bit of fiddling with the font and its size, and the opacity, and I think I will be there. Not as simple a solution as I would have liked but I think it will do.
Thanks again.
Robert
