Help needed for the helpless...
I am trying to follow a basic written tutorial and after duplicating the background layer and adding a layer mask to that layer, the tutorial states to double click the layer mask and the "layer mask palette" will fly out. When I do that I get that I get edge detection, smoothing etc fly out I don't get layer mask properties with the options of layer mask, color range and invert. The tutorial states to select color range. hmmm, lost and confused.

Judy, I have never used these options so would love a link to the tut you are following but I can show you how to find the properties you are looking for: See below.....after you double click make sure you are on the little mask at the top to see the options you are looking for.

Very big thanks to both of you!!! It is coming together a bit at a time. I looked at Helen's example and had an "ah hah" moment. I needed to set up my workspace to see the properties panel and then really look at it and see that if I scroll down I will see the color range and other buttons. Sure is annoying that the refine brush has to be set instead of being available like the select and mask. But again - THANK YOU BOTH!!!!
