I've always heeded the advice to put a simple UV filter on all my lenses so as to avoid damage to the lens. Monday reminded me of how wise that is. I did something stupid and dropped my camera. You can see what happened to the filter, but my lovely Nikon 18-200 lens escaped without a scratch.

Excellent advice and reminder Andy.
I have always bought a UV filter as well when I have bought a new lens. I am more worried about accidentally poking something through the front of the lens while walking around than dropping the camera, although that is always a possibility.
A replacement filter is so much cheaper than replacing a lens. I look at it as a cheap insurance policy.

Andy , great advice! Thanks! This made me smile! I had the same experience back on the EV forum. The UV filter saved my lens and my wallet!
