After putting this image in my Gallery I have been asked to explain how I did it. Rose kaleidescope by AlexR!, on Flickr A bit of background first... Another forum that I participate in had its monthly competition of 'Symmetry'. The only picture I had taken in the time of the competition was one of a valentine rose I had taken using an extension tube: Red red rose by AlexR!, on Flickr So I thought I could use this to do something, but didn't have much time available. So I basically used this tutorial: www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXZLYg1Ym3UIn essence, by copying into a new layer, flipping the layer and extending the crop out I got two roses side by side like a mirror, then flipped it again vertically to get four roses in a square. So it was symmetrical in two planes but I wasn't excited by it, I felt it needed more substance. So I added another layer, which I rotated by 45 degrees, then tried all the blending modes until I hit on what seemed to work best (which happened to be 'lighten' - I'm sure most of you would have known this but I can't ever visualise them, trial and error is my friend). The resultant rotated 8 roses slightly messed up the symmetry aspect but I thought it looked better and there were still some embedded symmetries. And that is it, nothing difficult at all. As a postscript, it didn't get anywhere in the competition it was designed for, so it was nice to get an honourable mention in the IOW.

Thank you, alexr! I think it's a terrific image and a friend I shared it with does as well. What I think makes it so interesting are the steps you added at the end. I hope to try out this technique in the next week or so.

In my opinion, the judges don't recognize a great piece of art when they see it.

What I especially liked about yours, Alex was what looked like overlapping of two wreaths.....and I also think the black gave it a very dramatic look. Looking at your original, I see how the deep recesses of the petals are black and I think this worked especially well. Not having a similar flower, I went with this one..... And came up with this.....
Thank you again for sharing this with us.
