They usually don't show the underside well. Easy to see why that are called painted turtles. Oldman River Valley in Lethbridge Alberta. April 11. 2019. Was cool today, but they were sunning and picking up some rays which probably feels good to the turtles. They spend winter under the ice and apparently do not bury into the mud but wander about, although slowly. Because the water is so cold their body temp is low and metabolism is low and they can absorb enough oxygen through their bodies to stay alive.

Wow, they are very eyecatching, certainly not good colours for camoflage!
