Images from Vecteezy, & Rosie.
Advice most welcome. Don't know why, but I couldn't get a textured background.
edit. Oh dear, it looks paler on here.
edit 2. Looks darker on magnification.

Wow, Margaret, what a nice job you did with the cut paper! The color looks just about right to me...in fact not just about but perfect!
Since you are asking for advice, I'll offer my two cents but it really is just a matter of personal preference. I don't really think you need the flowers and butterflies but that is just me. The dog is adorable!!!!

How cute is this whippet...love it...
I need to know a few details before I can help...The background you mention - is that the greenish one that's showing behind our oh so cute friend? I'm hoping you saved as a psd file and not a jpg. Would it be possible for you to provide a screen shot of your layers - what did you try re textures that didn't work for you?

I kinda agree with Helen - flowers and butterfly seem extraneous. Layout can stand by itself without added embellishment.
I find the blue the dog is leaning on to be distracting. I'd cut out the dogs legs - away from the blue - and have the legs go over the opening - kinda like an out of bounds look - Like he was resting on the bottom of the opening.

Thank you for the useful advice. Helen, the flowers and butterflys weren't on originally. But that background didn't fully cover as it was intended, and adding a clone of that colour, only put blotches on. So they are covering a fault. The torn paper wasn't mine, it was a freebie. I was wanting to have an old newspaper pattern, but couldn't find anything suitable. The dog one was on the same site page.
Shame really, there is a greyhound hidden behind a paper tear.
Lillias, surely you know me by now. I don't do saving.
Yes, that is the background I was talking about. I did a flood fill, but a couple of places, wouldn't.
cats4jan, The blanket was red and black, and looked awful. At least I did manage to get the paws over and out. And the ears. I quite agree with you about the OOB effect. Shame I didn't think of that myself.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to be of much help to you here whippet. I feel I'm letting you down but I just don't have much information to go on to help and saving straight away to a jpg - well there's nothing that can be done really...

Advice most welcome. Don't know why, but I couldn't get a textured background.
whippet, even if you didn't save the layered file, there is still hope.
If you want to keep the greenish area but textured, . . .
1. Make a selection of the greenish area. 2. Apply the Texturizer filter.
If you want to replace the greenish area with a textured one of your choice, try one of these techniques.
Technique 1: 1. Duplicate the background layer. 2. Add the background of your choice underneath the duplicate layer. 3. Add a layer mask to the duplicate layer. 4. Use a soft brush, color Black, and paint over the greenish area. This will hide the greenish background and make the one you added visible.
NOTE: For better results, change the brush size as you paint over.
Technique 2:
1. Duplicate the background layer. 2. Hide the original background layer. 3. On the duplicate layer, make a selection of the greenish area and delete it. 4. Add the background of your choice underneath the duplicate layer so that it shows through the transparent areas.
NOTE: You may have to use more than one selection tool. I would suggest the Magic Wand + the Quick Selection tool combo.
Personally, I would recommend Technique #1 (Layer mask). It will give you more editing flexibility. For example, if you painted with Black over an area you were not supposed to, . . . no harm done. Just switch the brush color to White and paint over that area to bring it back.

Normally, I would just start all over again.
Thank you very much for taking the time to give me the advice, Sepiana. I shall give that a try - probably tomorrow, when I am not so tired.
