Hi All I'm after a little advice on what to buy. I have a Nikon d5300 with the kit lens 18 to 55mm which is great but misses a lot of shots. I don't think I will upgrade to a full frame camera so DX format lens are fine for me. There are considerable price differences between lens, so want to make an informed choice. These are what I have looked at so far.
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR Lens
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR Lens (old version)
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR Lens (new version)
Tamron AF 16-300 mm f3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD Macro Lens for Nikon Camera
I have also considered
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55 - 200 mm VR II Lens for Camera
Do I need 300mm zoom I guess is another question.
One problem I do have is when i'm out with my camera, I normally have my two year old with me. This means photography has to come 2nd which may make changing lenses hard. On the plus side he is a willing candidate for photos and indeed 98% of the pictures are of him, not all in focus I have to say.
So any advice would be much appreciated, especially if you own any of the lenses. Thanks in advance
Shaun

Hi Shaun -
I have the 55-200 zoom. When I use it, I must say sometimes I wish I had the 300. But I also must say that 98% of my shooting is done with the 18-55.

When I had my Nikon D5000, I used this lense a lot: Tamron 18-270 mm F/3,5-6,3.
Very versatile, and I had it on my camera all the time. Good for travelling!

Like MajorMajor, I have the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55 - 200 mm VR II. I definitely like shooting with it, but so often wished it had more, and at other times wish I could get a little farther away without having to change lenses. With your child-constraint, I'd say you have the perfect excuse justification for getting the 18-300 variety!

Thanks all.
I think I will make the leap and buy the 18 - 300mm. If I type my pin in fast when paying i'm sure I'll hardly notice and then rush out and take pictures of my son, that way I'll feel it was a good plan.

Excellent Shaun; I am really looking forward to hearing what you have to say after you get to play with it for a while. I find it is SO tough spending that kind of money, second guessing my decision, but I am sincerely hopeful you tell us it was the right thing to do (because then maybe I will be able to make the leap!)

I agree you are making a good choice! I have the nikon 70-300, it is a great lens, but unfortunately the 18-300 was not available at the time I bought! I would like to have the option to go down to the 18, as the 70 is just to long in many cases! And not having to frequently change lenses would be great. Enjoy your purchase, you won't regret it.
