I recently watched this video and thought the technique was impressive. While written for PS, I believe this will work in PE as well. I am looking forward to trying this technique.

Very interesting Helen and it should work in PSE too as it does have the Maximum/Minimum filters referred too. Or should I say the version of PSE that I have has them...lol.

I wanted to compare this method with a similar technique I had posted quite some time by Matt Kloskowski. I found the minimum filter worked better on the bottom of the helicopter and Matt's method worked better on the tail. Finally I combined both methods using a mask: Ideally, I should have added a shadow for this to be a better composite but that wasn't what I was looking to do with this experiment. I would imagine that depending on your image, you might find one of these methods to work better for you. I did like the option to choose rounded when using the minimum method as it did a better job on the bottom of the helicopter. This video by Matt K.

Thanks Helen, I've never used the minimum and maximum filters.

I hadn't either, Karen. I was interested in trying this out. Like so many selection videos; the example was on a clean background. With a similar image the minimum/maximum filter might certainly be a better option. However, I wanted to compare it to Matt's technique under more challenging (perhaps too challenging for me!) conditions.

Seems to me you have achieved a great result with both of the techniques. I don't think that would have been an easy image to work on.

Thank you for sharing Helen,
This is very interesting. I have seen the filters in the menu in the past but never looked into how to use them.
Will certainly have a play with them now.

Helen, thanks for sharing this technique. My only experience with the Minimum filter has been to create a sketch effect. My go-to technique to get rid of an unsightly fringe has been the one by Matt K. Now I have another option for defringing.
