I just used the Clone Stamp thing a few days ago on a different photo and it worked fine. Today I tried it and it isn't working at all. When I do the Alt click thing to select the area to copy, it sort of sticks so that when I move the cursor/stamp thing it drags around a sort of copy of the photo. I must have accidentally clicked something that changes how it works. Any thoughts? Oh yeah, Elements 2018 (can't find the version, is that the version?) and doing this in Expert mode. Thanks.

Hi pwahl, Let's try resetting the Clone Stamp tool. Click on the little four-line square at the right end of the Tool Options area. Select Reset Tool.

Pwahl-
You can't "break a tool." My first thought would be to try to reset it.

I see Sepiana and I posted the same idea at the same time. Great minds, and all that. ..

Yes, but you pointed out the four-line pull-down, which is a little obscured in my screen shot.

We could combine our two posts and have a screen shot collage. Just a thought!

The behavior you describe sounds as if you may be using the Healing Brush. Are you sure the Clone Stamp is the active tool?

I should have put quotes around "broke", I was somewhat tongue in cheek with that. I did the tool reset (I had looked for something like that before I posted but didn't see that drop down all the way over there on the right side). That didn't change anything. But I clicked on that Clone Overlay thing and un-checked the box that said Show Overlay and that did the trick. I guess that somehow doesn't get reset when you do the Tool Reset. Maybe that tip on the Clone Overlay will help someone else. I don't really know how it got checked in the first place. Thanks for the help.

The Show Overlay setting is the default. That's why it didn't change when you reset the Clone Stamp tool. Thanks for posting back and sharing your tip re the Clone Overlay. It will undoubtedly help Elements users who may encounter this problem (particularly new users of this program). And, here is some more information on this setting. Hope it helps! Here is before and after if anyone is curious. Got rid of that crud on the bottom right. If this was a larger file you could see a little evidence of my tampering, but it's minor. (also tweaked the brightness and saturation, so the two photos don't look quite the same)

[off topic] Hi sepiana As they say, . . . great minds think alike. ... I always have a bit of a chuckle when I see that saying. At least in my part of the world, the second part is ".... and fools never disagree." I'm not saying you and the Major are fools. [/off topic]
