Hello: please can someone advise me how to change the Brush and/or Clone tool icons to a circle when selecting. Somehow
I have inadvertently changed them to a square defined by 4 right-angled lines. I have tried resetting the tools but
without success. many thanks.

Solved! I had the Caps Lock on.

Hi Mike, welcome back! Glad to hear . . . "Solved"! Great news.
Just adding some information for the benefit of PSE users (particularly new ones) who may come across this thread.
This Caps Lock key issue is not a bug; it is a feature. Many tools give you the option of a precise cursor (the little crosshairs). Pressing the Caps Lock key enables you to toggle this cursor on and off. However, two situations come to mind in which you don't have the choice to toggle the crosshairs on and off by pressing this key.
1. When the size of the image is too small in proportion to the cursor. Elements will, then, display the crosshairs in order to show the brush in the right scale for the image. The workaround is to zoom in; this will bring the circle cursor back.
2. When you are using a 1-pixel brush (which always uses crosshairs.)
