The last two Saturdays, I took lecture-only courses in Lightroom and then PhotoshopCC/Elements. There have been some very helpful links on this forum that clarified this stuff further. I think I want to buy LR Classic and PSE 2019--I don't care about cloud storage, and will only use them on my laptop, which I don't travel with. Adobe's web site is pretty opaque if you're looking for products without subscribing, so here are some questions:
I've noticed several references on Adobe's web site that their newest versions are compatible with the latest cameras, but will they play nicely with my 2011 vintage Canon EOS Rebel T2i? And will the apps play nicely with each other? My laptop is a newish HP Windows 10 model, so I don't anticipate any problems there.
The course instructor said Adobe generally releases new versions in late Sept/early Oct, so worth waiting a few more weeks?
Is downloading a one-and-done payment, or are you forced to subscribe monthly?
Are updates free until the newest version appears? Or only available by subscription?
Urrgghhh, Adobe doesn't make this easy to decide what with all the name changes! Thanks for any help.

Hi mwhiteaz, let's see if we can answer your questions. Lightroom (now called Lightroom Classic):
Adobe stopped releasing Lightroom with a perpetual license (one payment and you are done). Now you have to subscribe to it. This is what will happen if you stop paying for your membership/subscription. Source: Lightroom Classic | Common QuestionsPhotoshop Elements:
PSE is not part of the Creative Cloud membership. It is only available with a perpetual license; you pay for it once and you are done. As to your question about updates, . . .
Updates for Lightroom Classic:Adobe releases them several times during the year. They are free (a perk of your membership). Updates for Photoshop Elements:A new version of PSE is released once a year, usually in Sep or Oct. It is offered with two prices -- Full and Upgrade. The difference in price is determined by your status -- no previous ownership vs. previous ownership of this program. I've noticed several references on Adobe's web site that their newest versions are compatible with the latest cameras, but will they play nicely with my 2011 vintage Canon EOS Rebel T2i? And will the apps play nicely with each other? I believe what they are talking about is ACR support. Adobe added support for your camera a long time ago and it is still "in place". Cameras supported by Camera RawI subscribe to Lightroom Classic. I have had no problems using Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop) as its External Editor. They all work in perfect harmony!

Thank you, Sepiana--you were clear and comprehensible as always. Okay, so I'll have to subscribe to get anywhere--that's $9.99/mo, right? From what I saw in the lecture, I could see using LR a lot more than PSE; I'm not interested in creating composites or pages or anything. Haha, I wonder if they'll even sell me the upgrade on PSE 10, it's so old (and mostly stopped working, if you'll recall from a previous thread).

mwhiteaz, you are most welcome! Glad to be able to help.
Yes, that's what I pay -- $9.99/mo. This gives me access to both Lightroom and Photoshop.
The Upgrade price for PSE is valid for any previous version you may have (going back to the first version Adobe released). You should be eligible for this price.

Do you use the Photoshop CC included in that bundle? I ask since you're so active on the PSE forum.

Yes, I do use Photoshop quite a lot (for my personal projects); I have been using it since PS CS5. It is set up as my Primary External Editor in Lightroom.
My use of PSE is mostly geared to help our members and to apply some effects such as those "fun" ones in the Guided edit mode. It is my Additional External Editor in Lightroom.

I have just setup the Lightroom CC , the internet version, so that I can share with my iDevices. I can't find the "external editor" mode in the preferences or elsewhere. I can see only Photoshop. How do you get LR to recognize PSE2020? I am baffled as of now. TIA Charles J

In my understanding, you can't do anything worthwile with LR Cloud and Elements together. So I am not surprised there is no way to use an external editor in LR Cloud.

Michel, I use Lightroom Classic (the Desktop version). I have no experience with the Cloud version. My set-up: Photoshop CC -- Primary External Editor PSE 2020 -- Additional External Editor

But, looking like a deal breaker to me! As a matter of fact, if you read Lightroom posts in the Adobe feedback forum, you'll see that there is a lot of disappointment because LR Cloud works in a very different way than LR Classic both for catalogs and editing. In a few words: too many important features not yet available and extremely difficult to keep both versions synched. There is no way you could 'sync' organizer catalogs with LR Cloud. My guess is that Adobe will work for solutions to migrate PSE catalogs from Elements to LR Cloud but nothing to keep them in sync. I don't see how PSE could be used as an external editor.

Thanks, michelb, it is disappointing indeed. I will look for some other solutions.
