This is as it came from my camera. Does it look OK as it is? Some parts seem pale to me - the leaves where the sun is shining through. but I haven't a clue what to do.

Hi whippet,
You have a very high dynamic range in the scene - bright sky above the tree and low light beneath the canopy. Most cameras would struggle to capture the entire dynamic range in a single shot.
In this case you have a couple of options.
1. Expose for the subject of the scene, in this case the tree trunk and just accept the much brighter sky will be over exposed. With post processing you might be able to turn the over exposure into a special effect. Eg. add lens flare and or rays of light coming down from the canopy.
2. Mount your camera on a tripod and take at least 2 exposures - one for the sky and one for the tree trunk - and blend them in PSE.
If you have a RAW file for the image, you might be able to recover some of the details in the over exposed areas in ACR.

Thank you very much for your help, Bailey. Your suggestion is quite similar to advice Alexr gave me re. another tree. That one had too much darkness on it.
