Using a magnifying device (spotting scope or telescope) connected to a camera. These 2 images were captured with my iPhone5s coupled to my spotting scope. The setting sun caused a pink hue in the clouds on the opposite horizon where the moon was rising.

Pete, I don't pretend to understand your explanation, but the result is beautiful. Love it.

One uses a smartphone to capture images produced by a telescope or spotting scope. There are special adapters available that keep your phone rock steady while attached. My spotting scope is equivalent to a 3000mm lens. Of course to use it effectively a solid tripod is essential as is a remote shutter release for the phone. My scope plus adapter cost a mere fraction of a 3000mm lens. 2 images from the internet.
