Long story, short version. Near our summer place is one of dozens of Hutterite Colonies in Alberta. See here. These communal people have large, progressive farms with all of the best farm equipment and modern operations. (Grain, canola, cattle, hogs, chickens. And the very best welding fabrication shops and wood workshops.) All colonies have a large vegetable garden for their own use and for selling at farmers markets. This summer, Sharon and Stephen (gardeners at the Pincher Creek colony) came to our summer place development every Saturday for about two months. A few weeks ago, I gave Sharon some prints of her and her daughter after asking permission to take their photos. Two weeks ago, she asked if I would take family photos, so we did that today. (They are devout Christians, but after Sunday church they are free to relax and do what they want.) We had to deal with wind and blotchy lighting. I used a flash on all photos. This is Sharon, Stephen Gabrielle and Cornell.

Nice work Clive, the family should be really happy with these. Have you thought about getting rid of the flash in her glasses?

Good observation. Gabriel's glasses were a struggle .... her parents had anti reflective coatings. There is little glare in a couple of shots.
I'll have to blow the originals up and remove the glare with clone tool and paint brush a few pixels at a time. Had to use the flash as we shot in shade because the sun was so bright...there quite a few squinty pix even in shade.

With so much chaos and unrest in our nation today, I find reading about their way of life very appealing. It is nice to know that there is a shared respect for their way of life with your summer community. The portraits are lovely. I can't help but wonder if we as photographers notice things that perhaps they might not even pick up on. That being said, I hope you'll share the results of your "fiddling". With your permission, I would like to take screenshots and give it a try.

Lovely looking family. Both photos are beautiful but I particularly like your presentation of the second one Clive.

I think the same as Lillias, Clive. And the colours are fantastic. I bet the family love your pictures.
When I saw the pictures, Mennonites came to mind. Then I read the link - which confirmed it.
I agree with Helen, too. The Hutterite way of life does sound appealing.
