Didn't know where to post this. Can any of the experts tell me if this photo is genuine. Or has it been altered? I can't help but think that the aeroplane has been added to the picture.

Know what you mean whippet, but I suspect it is legit. If I was going to fake such an image I'd go all out and make it have a higher impact. So I think it's not fabricated. My only concern is the details in the plane and we have to realize it is about 10 km high (contrails are a clue). I've photographed high jets with a 400-mm lens and was able to make out the airlines's tail fin logo. So a good 600-mm lens should be able to accomplish this and to my eye, the relative size of the jet and moon seem correct. My aging brain thinks I might have something like this...will look. Clive

I also agree with both Clive & Tony.
Sometimes called perspective distortion, focal length or lens compression - take a look here
Here's a page from an eclipse presentation I put together for the 1/20/2019 lunar eclipse ... certainly on a smaller scale however.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to answer my query.
The picture was on a local facebook page (no copyright). There wasn't any information given, except that the photo was taken at a nearby beach.
Tony & Pete. Those moon shots are amazing.

I think it's fake. Otherwise, there would be a shadow on the Moon. It's a common mistake fakers make.

Whether this one is real or fake, I don't know. I assume it is possible to capture a real photo of a plane crossing the moon. For example, here is one posted on the NASA website apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap190212.html

kdcintx. Now I can see why astronomers are so dedicated. I took a look at a lot of the 'Tomorrow's picture'. Truly amazing.
Thank you for posting the link.
