Sorry for being quiet..been busy helping our son and writing a couple of political items. Limited PSE or photo time ... A new problem has emerged in my PSE 2018. Because of the nature I am not sure if the images below will help what's going on. In a nutshell, nothing happens in real time and not the way it has for 20 years. Perhaps I need to do this again as recommended by Sepiana. This is happening in several features, but I'll try to explain with the "text" tool. In the top image, I have activated the text tool and typed ABC, yet it does not display, which is awkward for editing and correcting mistakes. Yes, the background image is flattened and so the text is not hidden behind. I click the green check mark (above) and here is all there is ... Then I must click on the background layer in order for the typed text to appear! Thanks Clive

Perhaps I need to do this again as recommended by Sepiana. Clive, hold on your horses! That recommendation applies to the problem in the Effects/Styles panel. The databases in question do not "cater" to the Type tool. I'm not sure what is causing the Type tool to behave the way you describe. Let's see if the usual troubleshooting steps will do the job. If the first one doesn't work, try the other two in the order they are listed. Reset the Type tool:Click on the four-line square at the right end of the Tool Options area and select "Reset Tool". Launch Elements as administrator:1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut and select "Run as administrator". 2. Test the Type tool. 3. If the problem is gone, close Elements. 4. Open Elements but this time do it as a regular user. Delete the Preferences file:
1. Go to Edit>Preferences>General. 2. Click on the "Reset Preferences on next launch" button. 3. Ignore the "This cannot be undone." warning and click OK. 4. Close Elements and then start it again.

Oh wow, I have no idea what's happening ... all weird. I did the two things you suggested and nothing changed. I will now restart while I am making dinner and see what happens. This shows examples of two issues in this screenshot...neither text tool. 1) See the navigator window. When I open a new image it does not appear in the nav window until I click somewhere. Then the image shows in the nav window. 2) See the arrow outline. I was going to draw red arrow pointing to the nav window. And all that shows is the arrow outline UNTIL the image is clicked. All of this is livable (except the text issue), but it's sure wonky. How weird is this? I am wondering of there is some "corruption" in my old Asus laptop. I'll shut my computer down and restart after dinner. Will advise then. Thanks Clive

Hi Clive. A couple of days ago I had exactly the same experience using the text tool in PSE2018. I tried clicking a few things but the text was still not visible so eventually I closed PSE2018 then when I restarted it everything was fine again. This had happened before and a few little other glitches, details of which I can’t remember, so I don’t think you have to worry about a corruption in your laptop. Incidentally I was also using a laptop.

Clive Clive, you are most welcome! I paid a visit to the Adobe forums; there have been reports of a similar problem (with Photoshop CC). The usual recommendations were to reset the Type tool or delete the Preferences file. In some cases the computer had to be restarted. If this happens again, you may want to report it on the Adobe Feedback forum. feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/categories/photoshop_family_photoshop_elements
