Recently - possibly since buying PSE2020 - when I start up my computer the Photo downloader starts up automatically.
It is trying to upload from my external hard drive (E:Maxtor) which I use for backup purposes.
All the photos I have taken in 2019 will be there as backup copies but the originals are still on my C: drive so there is no need to upload them again.
So far I've been able to stop the process before it is completed but one day I'll be distracted or my husband will turn on the computer then I'm not sure what will happen. There are 3,200+ photos currently in the 2019 folder not to mention an unknown number in various other places on my hard drive. I've never come up against this problem in earlier editions of PSE.
I have looked at File > Watch Folders and the Maxtor drive is definitely not one of those. Is there anywhere else where I could have inadvertently instructed PSE to carry out this process?

More than likely PSE 2020 will be the same as PSE 2018.
PhotoDownloader.exe is a separate program; on a windows pc it's located C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements 2018 Organizer\PhotoDownloader.exe
If you manually launch the program you should be able to change the source location

ChrisAnn , I may be missing something here . . . but I have made adjustments to the Photo Downloader settings without launching it manually (.exe file). I just do it from within the Organizer -- File>Get Photos and Videos>From Camera or Card Reader (shortcut = Ctrl-G). When the Photo Downloader dialog opens up, I go to the "Get Photos from" box, bring up the menu, and make my choice. Then, if necessary, I click on the Advanced Dialog button to do some fine-tuning. Have you tried that? Can you change from "E:Maxtor"? If not, something else is going on. I am no Organizer expert; I will bring this thread to our in-house Organizer guru -- michelb . Hang in there!

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm embarrassed to say that almost immediately I posted my query the whole automatic download thing just stopped. All I did was take a screenshot, absolutely nothing else. I've just turned on the computer again this morning and everything is working as it should no phantom download. No idea why it stopped, just so glad that it has. Thanks so much for your suggestions. I've taken a copy of them and kept it safely should it decide to play up in the future. I should have asked a week ago when the whole thing started - obviously there is some sort of mystic vibe coming from this forum and the gremlins know that they can't compete. So sorry to have bothered you.

ChrisAnn , First of all, no need to apologize for posting this thread. Speaking for myself, I find it very valuable. It will undoubtedly help other members who may encounter a similar problem. Hopefully, this was just a fluke and it won't happen again. But, if it does, you will know the route to follow (Organizer>File>. . .). And if that doesn't work? Post back. Help is only one post away!

I don't find any preference setting in the downloader which would trigger an immediate import from the card reader, but I suspect that may happen if you plug in a card reader while the organizer is working. I often get a popup from Windows explorer asking what action I want to do when plugging the card reader, that includes importing files from the card reader. I don't know how to manage that option in Windows, I always choose to do nothing, and it seems that the choice is sticky...

Thanks Michelb. It has stopped happening now so I have my fingers crossed that the gremlin which was causing it has gone off to annoy someone else. Thanks for your response.

It's started to do it again - so I'm off to do what Peterj suggested. I've done nothing to the downloader since it started doing it last time and then stopped of its own accord. It's in the process of downloading from the external hard drive which is permanently plugged into the computer, never unplugged or turned off. Why download - stop downloading - start downloading again? The only thing I can think of is we've just had an update of Win 10 (not the Feature update which is lurking around, just a routine one) which may have triggered it.
Edit: I've found the exe file and clicked on it. The downloader screen came up and showed nothing in the Search box - which is what I would have expected. I think it must be something from outside PSE that is triggering it as this always happens as I turn on the computer in the morning (we switch off every night) and PSE isn't active.

Windows provides a utility that provides the end users the capability to control what programs are started upon Win startup. Prior to Win 10 it was named msconfig; using Win 10 one needs to search for System Configuration"
Disabling any particular program at Win startup simply stops the program from running at startup time; if needed later the program will work, albeit takes a bit longer to start.

I've looked at the Utility and this is what loads at Start up:
The only thing which looks remotely like what I'm having problems with is 'Elements Auto Creations 2020 ' or 'Adobe Updater Startup Utility'
Does anything strike you?

Not really, but since disabling is non-destructive give Auto Creations a try.
