Members submitting an image for this challenge are asked to offer a brief statement as to why they chose their image. Participants in the challenge have the option of presenting an edit with the photographer’s reasons in mind or instead presenting an image that reflects their own creative vision.1. Participants in the challenge are asked to provide a screenshot of their edits within the RAW converter of their choice along with the reasons for their edits. 2. Following their initial edits members may use whatever “tools" they wish to create an image that portrays their artistic vision for the image as long as the character of the original image is not lost. 3. Including information on plug-ins, actions, external editors, textures, sky replacements etc that were used will only help to inform members of some of the creative options that are available to today’s photographer. 4. Including layer stacks may be something to consider when presenting a final edit. You have two weeks to participate in this challenge. It ends on Nov. 16th. At the end of the challenge the image creator will select their three favorite edits. Comments are restricted to complimenting another member's edit.
So let's get started! The photographer had this to say about the image: "I captured this image during a walk in a desert wash near my home in Marana, AZ. I was attracted to this composition because of the contrast of the right hand foreground (cholla cactus) compared to the colorful sky. The cholla was really close so the slight OOF seemed to accentuate the fuzzy look." Here is a screenshot of the image we will be working on. And here is the link to the dng file.

Thanks Helen and mystery [ ] contributor. Second image shows what I did. Hit it quite hard in ACR the first pass and then opened the jpg again in ACR and made a few more changes. Basically I jazzed up the colors and contrast. To my eye, the jumping cholla dominated the foreground too much so I cropped the image to a pano thus removing most of the cactus.

I went with what caught the eye of the photographer and decided to process twice in Camera RAW once for the background: And once for the foreground....hoping to get some detail in the cactus: This was followed with an effort to reduce noise on the cactus using NIK Define. Then I went into CE4 to try to recover some detail. Placed the foreground over the background and used a mask with a black and white gradient to combine the two exposures. Used the hue saturation slider to reduce some blue and cyan colors in the cactus. Used a curves layer to set the grey point which seemed to unify the tone of the image. Additional fiddling to improve overall contrast. Added a vignette
Have to say that I found this a very challenging image to work on.....excellent choice for this challenge!

Opened in Camera Raw and adjusted settings as per screen shot. Took into PSE 2020 and duplicated the image twice. Gave the first duplicated copy a levels adjustment and changed blend mode to Screen. For the second duplicated image I used the Multiply Blend mode and a layer mask at 41% masking out the lower half of the image to reveal some of the foreground from the Screen Blended image.

Version 2 Added fog and sun rays Frank, awesome addition! It looks so real, so natural! It is like the fog and sun rays were there to begin with.

This was certainly an interesting challenge to work on. I decided to treat the sky and the foreground separately so made two virtual copies in Lightroom and picked a couple of profiles that I liked - one for the sky and one for the foreground. I've become a big fan of Lightroom profiles and have a bunch from Matt Kloskowski that I use to quickly adjust the look of an image. Then combined the two images in Photoshop and sent the combination back to Lightroom. Used the Auto Tone setting and tweaked the texture and white balance sliders and added a slight vignette. Here's what I finished up with - will have to try again as the image has all sorts of possibilities. Tony

Interesting the way you have used the profiles, I look forward to your next submission. I have to say that I think you all have done a really nice job with this.....much better than what I came up with! I may have to try another one as well.

Took my first upload and applied a posterization effect to it. To that I added Warming Filter (85). On the posterization layer I also added the Stylize > Trace Contour filter. Darkened that with a levels adjustment and blended with the Overlay blend mode.

Tried another one......screened my original to make it very light. Took that into Topaz Impression and used one of the cave dweller presets. Placed the original dark version that I posted earlier this week above the cave dweller edit and reduced the opacity: And came up with this....
