A local photographer invited me for a drive-about yesterday specifically to find snowy owls. We saw a few but not at close range as they were spooky. This is not so much a snowy owl photo as merely a photo of a winter's day on the plains. The weird (but cool) 3-D effect on the fence posts is the result of snow plastered onto the north side of fence posts (from about 3 days ago) and the snow is shaded by the posts. It's a bit weird, but the way it was. There was fog the night before and the barbed wire is coated with rime. A great day.

Thanks for the explanation about the snow behind the fence, Clive. That is just a whopping amount of snow!

Clive, you should be working for National Geographic with photos like that!

That is just a whopping amount of snow! Thanks for your kind words everyone. I hope to get back to this area in the next few days. Life is busy right now and more snow next week. Shall see. But the snowy owls will hang around the general area all winter. This and other snowy owls were just 45 minutes away. Saw one last year just 15 minutes away but they tend to not come over our way. Helen, there were only a few inches of snow and it's pretty much gone now with the warm and wind. More snow next week. Clive

Thanks, Clive. Looking again I can see the snow behind the fence is actually a field in the background.....I had thought it was a snow drift up against the fence.

It is a strange phenomenon for sure. It looks cool but is also an optical illusion and messes with the eyes. This might help. For one thing, it shows the entire scene before cropping.
