Can anyone please help me,? I am using PSE 2018 with Windows 8.1 2 weeks ago I installed quite a large pattern file (about 50 patterns) and everything worked perfectly. I had to wait to close down my laptop as It was doing an update, think it was a windows one. The next day I was unable to open the editor and got this message I tried waiting but nothing happened, I closed the message but still nothing happened. I made a shortcut to desktop but got the same message when I tried to open from it. I then tried to open the program as administrator but when it asked if I would allow the program to change my computer I panicked and pressed no. Should I try again to open as administrator and press yes and if that works what do I do then Should I uninstall and then reinstall as I have the discs .....I would really appreciate any suggestions from you clever people out there as I really have no idea what to do? The Organizer opens without a problem as does PSE11

Hi moss, I’m sorry you are having difficulties trying to open PSE 2018. These things are so annoying especially if you can’t put your finger on the problem. I’m no expert here but as for the notice that pops up when you try to open the program ‘as administrator’ it should be safe to say ‘yes’ as it is you that is initiating this and then if all works correctly the program should just go ahead and open as normal. Hopefully thereafter you should be ok. If not then perhaps an uninstall and reinstall would be the way to go... Hopefully some of our other more knowledgeable members will pop in with their thoughts on how your problem could be resolved.
One other thought - you mention recently installing a large pattern file - perhaps if you could remove that from the program files you could see if that affected anything...grasping at straws here.

moss,
Based on your description of the "symptoms", it doesn't look like the problem is with Elements itself, with the shortcut to the Editor having got corrupted or a case of permission levels (requiring you to launch Elements as administrator). As this problem developed following the installation of third-party patterns (.pat files), I am inclined to say that the root of the problem lies with the .pat files (corrupted?) or with the installation process.
- Where did you get those files? - How did you install them? Did you use the Preset Manager or did you copy/paste the files in the Presets folder?
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2018\Presets\Patterns
I would recommend not taking the drastic approach of uninstalling Elements. Instead, I would suggest removing those files from within Elements and installing them again. But this time install a few files at a time and check the Editor as you do it. In this case, if there is a corrupted file, it will be easier to pinpoint the culprit. This will also help if the problem was with the installation process steps.

Thank you both so much for your help and suggestions.
I bought the patterns from Creators Couture and just loaded it.
I will try to delete them as Sepiana suggested. To do that, do I just go to
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2018\Presets\Patterns
select the appropriate file and press delete or do I have to uninstall them( as you can see I know nothing about what goes on at the heart of my laptop!)
thank you again for your patience I really appreciate your help

moss, just select the .pat files and, then, delete them.
NOTE: Make sure Elements is closed while you are doing this.
When you are finished, open Elements and check the Editor to see if the problem is gone.

moss, you are most welcome! Keeping my fingers crossed as well!
BTW, when you decide to put those files back in Elements, just copy/paste them in the Patterns folder.
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2018\Presets\Patterns
and . . . make sure Elements is closed while you do copy/paste.

Thank you so much for your help, however, I went into Presets\Patterns but the file in question was not there. I think I may have mislead you when I said that I installed the patterns ... in actual fact I just loaded them (as I would with brushes) . Sorry
So I am still not able to open PSE2018 Editor ............any more ideas please

If you just loaded those .pat files, then, you used the Preset Manager. The usual way to delete them is to launch the Preset Manager, open the Patterns library (Ctrl-5), right-click on the .pat file you want to delete, and select "Delete Pattern". Unfortunately, it looks like the Editor is not staying open for you to be able to do this.
I am not sure this is going to work but let's try going this route. Navigate the path below to the Patterns folder. Check if those .pat files are there. If they are, delete them.
C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\16.0\Presets\Patterns
NOTE: Keep Elements closed while you do this.

You are right I am unable to get to the Preset Manager so I tried your second option
I navigated to username but there was no AppData so I searched for that and when it came up I proceeded through Roaming\Adobe and then the only thing that came up was Flash Player ..... no Photoshop Elements I searched in Adobe for Photoshop Elements but got a message ...no items match your search
So again I have hit a brick wall
So frustrating
Incidentally when I loaded the pattern file I just did it from the pattern / drop down box / load pattern ........ I didn’t open the Preset Manager ........don’t know if that helps?

I navigated to username but there was no AppData so I searched for that and when it came up I proceeded through Roaming\Adobe and then the only thing that came up was Flash Player ..... no Photoshop Elements I searched in Adobe for Photoshop Elements but got a message ...no items match your search That path is an intrinsic part of any Elements installation. As a matter of fact, you should have two "Photoshop Elements" folders, the other one being for v.11. The usual is to have two accounts on Windows -- an Administrator and a Standard User one. As a rule of thumb, the Photoshop Elements folder should be in the "your username" path. Maybe, in your case, it is not. Check the Administrator path. C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\ . . . C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\ . . .
Incidentally when I loaded the pattern file I just did it from the pattern / drop down box / load pattern ........ I didn’t open the Preset Manager ........don’t know if that helps? It helps immensely. Now I am wondering about two other variables -- the download process and file compatibility. Can you send me a PM with as much information as possible? Ex.: - Link to the website, more specifically to the files you got. - Detailed information on the download process you used.

moss, thanks for the PM! The detailed information you provided will be very helpful in this troubleshooting. I will do further testing to see if we can find a solution. I will keep updating this thread as to my findings.

For the benefit of those who may have stumbled upon this thread at the end of the discussion, . . . here is a recap.Problem:2 weeks ago I installed quite a large pattern file (about 50 patterns) and everything worked perfectly.
The next day I was unable to open the editor and got this message [Photoshop Elements 2018 Editor has stopped working]. Troubleshooting:As this problem developed following the installation of third-party patterns (.pat files), I am inclined to say that the root of the problem lies with the .pat files (corrupted?) or with the installation process. Findings:Testing of those files and of the steps used to load them into the Editor showed that neither were they corrupted/damaged nor was this a case of operator’s error. Therefore, these two variables were disregarded. Troubleshooting:At this point, we began looking into another variable -- the Editor’s Preferences file. The error message at the Editor’s start-up followed by it crashing can sometimes be the result of this file getting corrupted/damaged. Solution:Delete the Editor’s Preferences file to force Elements to generate a new one. However, in this case, this couldn’t be done from within the Editor (Edit>Preferences>General>Reset Preferences on next launch). Therefore, one of the workarounds below had to be used. Press and hold Alt-Ctrl-Shift immediately after Elements begins launching. Click Yes to delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements settings file. ORNavigate the path below and delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements 16 Prefs.psp file. Then, launch the Editor to see if it stopped crashing. C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\16.0\Editor\Adobe Photoshop Elements 16 Prefs.pspResults:- The error message no longer popped up when the Editor opened. - The Editor stopped crashing. - No problems with the files from Creators Couture. They are working flawlessly!
