I use the "Arrow" more than any other shape in the selection here, but today for some unknown reason to me the Arrow is greyed out. How do I get this back? Thank you!

Charles, By design, that's the color of this tool -- gray. Click on its icon to activate it. Once you do that, the color won't change but this tool is activated.

Sepiana,
There is something else wrong then. When I click on the arrow (which I did do before asking for help) I get a totally BLACK mouse arrow that when I try to use it (clicking on the left mouse button) will draw a rectangular or square box but then when I release the mouse key the box then disappears!! It does not draw anything really.
Gonna make you think more on this problem?? <smyle>

Charles, If you are trying to draw a shape (rectangular, square, round, etc.), you need to use the other tools in that group such as the Rectangle, the Round Rectangle, the Ellipse tool, etc. The Shape Selection tool is to be used to move or transform the shape you drew. Select or move a shape
Transform a shape

What I am trying to do like I have done hundreds of other times is use the Arrow tool to point to something of importance in an image.

I believe you need the Custom Shape tool. - Open the Custom Shape picker. - In the drop-down menu, select "Arrows".

The grayed out arrow, as Sepiana has pointed out is the shape selection tool. You can either do an arrow using the custom shape tool or use the line tool with an arrow head at one or both ends.

Well I guess the shape selection tool is what I used in the past, although I thought I just clicked on the greyed out arrow which I did not remember it being greyed out before. I did tinker around with it and found it does work the way I remembered it should work! I probably at one time years ago knew there was a huge selection of different shapes, but my "rememberer" does not work like it used to work. A true sign of aging...sigh... Thank you Sepiana!!

I do not understand how the greyed out arrow can be a selection tool, when now if I select the grey arrow and try to draw with it, it does not draw anything? I do not remember ever trying the line tool, with a pointer at either end or on both ends that one may come in handy, iffn I do not forget about it when I need it! But the Shape Arrow tool I can turn it around easy enough with the "move" tool I Thank you also Frank!

One thing I would like to notice here is that if you hover the cursor over a tool icon you should get a quick tip (or whatever they are called). For me the last icon (gray arrow) says "Shape Selection Tool (U)". The first 7 tools are actual shape-creation tools, the last one is used to select a previously created shape.
Does that help to clarify the situation at all?

Hi Tpgettys,
When I select a shape tool and use it such as the arrow, then if I select a totally different tool, maybe the eraser, then go back and then select the grey arrow, it does not select the previously used tool. So no that does not clarify anything for me.

Charles, This may clarify what is happening. Once you have drawn your shape using one of the other tools in the group, you can use the Shape Selection tool (Arrow icon) to "edit" the shape. With one click, you select the shape and, then, you can move or transform it. However, the Shape Selection doesn't work if you have simplified the shape layer; it will no longer select the shape. When you used the Eraser on the shape, you were asked to simplify the layer. Once you do that, you can't go back and use the Shape Selection tool again. Now, if you need to move or transform the shape you drew, you use the Move tool or the Transform command.
You can find more information on how to use the Shape Selection tool in the Help file. Check the links I posted earlier. photoshopelementsandmore.com/post/62817

Sepiana,
With what you wrote above NOW I understand how "Shape Selection Tool (U)" works, or maybe I think I do anyway!
Thank you!
