Short intro ... I bought a new ASUS laptop computer on Nov 25. 1TB internal HD and 256 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM ... etc. Works great, but it was being fussy (read, slow) searching external drives which I rely on (I own 13 external HDs) and access daily. (I put about 5 years of photos and docs on one new 5TB drive and it is essential to daily life.) I solved the slow search issue which was done by changing the settings in Windows Explorer search.
After solving the search speed to my satisfaction, I was looking online and came across an article about a search software that is unreal!! It is called Everything. It gets good reviews and cnet.com is a trusted site. So I installed it..the download and install were perhaps 3 or 4 minutes tops.
download.cnet.com/Everything/3000-2379_4-10890746.html
Basically, you type a word (that is in the file name) in the search window and while you are typing it is finding matches and is done by the time you have finished typing the search word. Did a test with the word "rainbow" and in about 2 seconds it found ~300 files in one external drive with rainbow in the file name. The drive I was searching has close to 1 TB of mainly photo files ... maybe 50,000 or more photos.
Anyway, this software gets great reviews and I am most pleased. I need to learn more.

I agree Clive. Its a great little programme. I use it all the time. The Windows search engine can sometimes take forever and find thousands of irrelevant files. "Everything" can usually find what I want in seconds!
Kind regards Chris

Thanks Chris. The program is great and I use it every day to find files or photos. The filters to narrow searches are great. Clive
