We buy a bag of hyacinth bulbs every fall and store them in the cold room for a few weeks. When the new shoots appear they are set in an assortment of glass vases or jars filled with water. The roots appear in 2 or 3 days and grow fast. The fancy Lalique vase vase is an instant coffee jar.

Great picture, and great vase, Clive. Brilliant idea. I love to have hyacinths in the house. The scent is beautiful. I usually get a pot of them as a Christmas gift. When they finish flowering, they are put away, then planted in the garden later. They smell just as good outdoors. I would never have thought of jars, though. I get my coffee by the big tin size - I am an addict.

Thanks whippet. In the same bay window shelf there are also orchids which we have great luck with and most last several years. (The orchids bloom for about 3 months and as we have a few there are always blooms.) The hyacinths are lovely and, as you said, they smell nice. We discard the used bulbs in the compost after they finish. A nice treat in the darkest time of year. Clive

I have kept orchids for about 10 years - or more. I have not had a scented one yet. It is a shame that most people throw them away when they have finished flowering.

How beautiful, Clive. I will try and store this idea away for the next time winter is here downunder. Do you just use water or is there some secret fertiliser added to it?

whippet: our orchids last 3 to 5 years and at some point they seem to weaken and don't develop a new flower shoot. So I buy another. The odd thing is they are in a bay window in the kitchen and it gets quite cool there when it is very cold outside, but they seem to like the environment there.
Jacki: just plain water. They get nourishment from the bulb.
Good fun in winter.
