I am quite sure you all have been given these instructions at one time or another.
1. Make your selection.
2. Use Refine Edge to fine-tune your selection edges.
3. Do Ctrl/Cmmd-J to place your selection on its own layer.
4. Add a layer mask (if your project requires it).
Did you know that, in more recent versions of Elements, the Ctrl-J/Cmmd-J step to place a selection on its own layer is a thing of the past, i.e., is obsolete?
Starting with Elements 11, Adobe introduced an updated Refine Edge feature (brought over from Photoshop). The Output section in the Refine Edge dialog gives you the choice of having your selection on its own layer. The end result will be the same as when you use Ctrl-J/Cmmd-J -- Elements cuts out your selection and places it on its own layer (and even adds a layer mask to your selection if you tell it to do so).
