It's cold here. I went to the city today and, as almost always, had my camera with me. To my delight, a faint sun halo was visible so I turned left instead of right to go to Costco and it was just a 2-minute drive for a fairly unobstructed view. From a Facebook post: 2:48 PM January 14, 2020 -25°C, wind ENE 17 -36°C windchill
f11, ISO 125, at 1/1,250 second. Pays to keep a close eye, wear polarized sunglasses and schlep the camera when you go to Costco. Earthsky says: The halos you see are caused by both refraction, or splitting of light, and also by reflection, or glints of light from these ice crystals. The crystals have to be oriented and positioned just so with respect to your eye, in order for the halo to appear. It vanished when I drove back to Costco either "just because" or because I changed position.

What a catch, Clive! Something I've never heard of much less seen. TFS.

Thanks. Things like are neat to see, but it is not as impressive in real time. You have to basically "look" right at the sun and shield your eyes with a hand so it is not quite as (what?) relaxing or casual as a regular rainbow. Still neat to see. Was pleased to have my camera.

Fantastic photo. I've seen the same phenomenon causing a halo around the moon.

Wow Clive, that looks very impressive. Our sunrises these days are red from the bushfire smoke, though yesterday we had some very welcome rain that will hopefully make its way up the East coast and help with the fires there that are still burning.

Clive Clive Looking at your photo, the sun has the same effect on my eyes as it does 'in real life'.
