This has nothing to do with PSE unless possibly you are a MAC user, & it was seeing the thread about an iMac Mini running Yosemite that has prompted this post. For years I have been admiring the beautiful images people have taken in Yosemite National Park and until last week I'm embarrassed to say that I honestly thought that Yosemite was pronounced just like it looks ie Yoss-e-might with the stress on the first syllable, to rhyme with Vegemite, the delicious Australian yeast extract paste (cousin of the equally delicious British version Marmite) - and then it occurred to me that maybe if the Americans came across Vegemite they might think it was pronounced like Yosemite? (ie Veg-e-mitty with the stress on the second e) It's been a very long day...... Bayla

I live in Poverty Springs, KY or HickVille, depending on which town limit sign you want to believe, a land plagued with malapropisms and mispronunciations. This begins in elementary school and the teachers are just as guilty as the reddest neck illiterate. What I find rather amusing is that, in the neighboring county, there is a small community Yosemite, and EVERYONE pronounces it Yoseemight, long O, long E, long I, emphasis on all three syllables. Funny thing is they pronounce the big national park correctly; Yosemite, Yosimmatee, long O, short i, short a, long E. (if you are really proper, it is Yusimmitty, short u ) The spelling is exactly the same; they just never made the connection. Also, two counties over and about 70-miles away is a big livestock stockyards and tobacco market town, Lancaster. EVERYONE pronounces it Lankster, long A, rhymes with prankster. When they are meaning the town in Pennsylvania, they pronounce it properly, Lancaster. Again, they have never made the connection. So, you are not entirely wrong in your pronunciation of Yosemite.

A very interesting conversation that details just how complex and confusing the English language and how to voice it can be. Place names in New Zealand can be equally confusing and alarming, eg., Wh is pronounced as Fff, so when you see a place name like Whakapapa, it's not said as wakapapa but fukapapa, had my teenage boys in stitches whenever we were listening to the radio as we travelled around in this beautiful part of the world.

As a teenager in the 80's and thanks to Men At Work and "Down Under", I can say I've known the correct pronunciation of Vegemite for a long time!
