The text below is copied from an email I sent this evening ... some comments won't make sense to you. Too lazy to edit out. Yesterday was my birthday and I went for a drive to find snow geese and the Birthday Gods treated me well. BTW, Klaus, Tyrrell Lake was frozen shore to shore to shore. I bet that has not happened for decades i.e. frozen solid on April 8. So I drove to Horsefly Lake SE of Taber via Hwy 36. On Chin Reservoir where the Hwy 36 bridge crosses the reservoir there were about 50,000 snow geese. (There was about 3 km of open water but still a lot of ice.) Then I drove to Horsefly and there were perhaps 15,000 snow geese there, and I was able to get quite close. Horsefly was at least half ice covered.
At Horsefly, several hundred snow geese were ~400m off the county road on a mud flat next to the lake. Methinks, I'll just walk in that direction and see what happens expecting them to fly away. Not only did they stay, and let me approach within about 60m or so (and I was in the open, only partly obscured by cattails), geese landed at <100m from me while I was standing right in the open. Was quite fun. A great birthday!

Thanks for sharing your "gift" with us, Clive While seeing them flying all together like that is quite fascinating, my favorite images is the one of just the two birds.

It must be really nice to be among nature like that Clive. I have only experienced a very little of that last year when three or maybe it was 4 deer came down from the hills into the fields at the back of our garden. It was a misty morning and I was afraid I would scare them off so I stood very still and just enjoyed the scene before me. A real privilege.

my favorite images is the one of just the two birds. Helen, yes, I agree. There is no denying that the masses are awesome, but the closer images of one or two birds are my faves as well. (I posted a solitary landing goose in the current IWO.) Thanks all. It was a good day for sure. Clive
