As you know, I am no expert. But, to me, the moon doesn't look right. Maybe overpowering is the word I am looking for. Every time I look at the picture, my eye is drawn to that.

I find myself in agreement with whippet here. The tree looks great but there is something about the moon that just doesn't look right to my eye. I think maybe the size - it tends to dominate the scene and I can't seem to see past it. Perhaps reduce the size and the opacity somewhat and see how that looks.

I tend to agree with Margaret and Lillias. My first thought was that the moon had too much visible detail and the overall toning of the foreground/background didn't match. It made me think of the movie E.T. so I did a quick google search. I was surprised to see that the moon in those images had as much visible detail as they did. You might want to check them out to get some ideas for further editing. I do like your idea here so hope you'll post any changes if you decide to make them.

I too think it would help if opacity of the moon were reduced to make it look more ghostly. I would crop the original shot of the rider so as to make him about twice the size he is now. I'd also like to see the tree moved further left, away from the edge, and enlarged enough to scale with the size of the rider. Just my 2cents.

I like the way you've interpreted the moon illusion with you primary image. However for the moon to appear this large the horse and rider should be about 3x the size. Thin cloud cover generally obscures some of the detail. Moon rising has more of earth's atmosphere in the moon's way so the moon generally isn't quite a white.
If this were my composite: * reduce saturation and detail on the grass in foreground, but keep detail on horse, rider, & tree * darken the primary shot as it's too bright for a rising moon * consider replacing the sky since the clouds seem to be lit from above * color grade the moon with a yellow/orange

dandc Great concept! Some good suggestions. Just BTW, "daytime" moons tend to be bluish vs grayish. As noted, it almost looks as if the lower right of the moon is in front of the cloud. Let us know if you do a 2.0. Clive

Not sure what your objective is with this composite. It looks somewhat other worldly because the moon is soooo big and high contrast compared to the rest of the image. Seems to me the moon is too big to be realistic.

To me the sky and moon colors are off. Can’t put my finger on it but something is off. Maybe it’s the clouds, they look like daytime clouds and the moon wouldn’t be rising yet? Maybe try it without the moon and put in a really dramatic sky? I like the concept!

Love your concept; however, I agree with the above critiques and would add that it seems to me that your concepts are contradicting each other. The horse/rider, tree and grass are 'minimalist', but the moon is huge and I think these oppose each other causing a feeling of discomfort in the viewer. Also, the edges of the moon make it look like a cutout...you might consider defringing it to make it blend in better, particularly the sides.
I would love to see your final image if you do make any changes.

Thanks everyone for your input and guidance. I thought the moon abit off and you've confirmed that AND given my specific areas to focus on for an improvement. Thanks Helen for the info on the upcoming classes as well. I have a bunch of other shots to edit so I may not get to working on the corrections for this composite for awhile (this was my second attempt - the first, a B&W, wasn't even worth asking about ;^) - but I'll post any future versions of it here for your feedback.
